For a compact introduction to country music in 2024, start with Cold Beer & Country Music, Trail Of Flowers, Passage Du Desir and Cowboy Carter. This is an unranked, curated shortlist—not a definitive poll—built from year-end selections by Holler, Stereogum and Country Now, with the Associated Press’s recognition of Beyoncé’s album included. The choices span traditional country, country-pop, roots music and genre-crossing work.
How this shortlist was chosen
The source lists use different approaches: Holler ranked 25 albums, Stereogum presented 10 favorites alphabetically, and Country Now named 16 choices without ranking them. Their lists do not establish a shared score or formal consensus. This article draws on their overlapping attention where available, then adds records that broaden the range of sounds and perspectives. The selections are unranked.

The guiding questions are practical: Does the album offer a compelling version of country or its roots? What do its songwriting and perspective add? And does it open a notable conversation about the genre? Since country’s boundaries are contested, the list includes country-adjacent work while identifying the publications’ judgments rather than treating genre labels as settled fact.
Eight country and country-adjacent albums to hear
Zach Top — Cold Beer & Country Music
Holler placed this album first on its 25-album year-end list. Country Now points to its traditional-country sound, including fiddle, steel guitar and banjo, and describes Top’s interest in bringing a 1990s-country sensibility into a modern setting. It is a natural starting point for listeners who want the classic band textures and direct country sound represented in 2024’s picks.

Sierra Ferrell — Trail Of Flowers
Both Holler and Stereogum included Ferrell’s album. Stereogum describes a blend that brings country together with pop, honky-tonk and Beatles-like songwriting. That mix makes it a useful bridge between roots-minded country and more eclectic songwriting, without reducing the record to a single lane.
Johnny Blue Skies — Passage Du Desir
Holler ranked the eight-track album third, and Stereogum also selected it among its favorites. Stereogum describes a meeting of country and rock; Holler discusses Sturgill Simpson’s release under the Johnny Blue Skies moniker. It belongs on a shortlist for listeners interested in country’s relationship with rock as much as its traditional forms.

- Morgan Wallen's fourth album, I'm The Problem, features the hit singles "Lies, Lies, Lies," "Love Somebody," "I'm The Problem," "Just In Case," "What I Want (feat
Megan Moroney — Am I Okay?
Holler included Moroney’s sophomore album in its top 25 and characterized it as a step forward. It gives the shortlist a contemporary country perspective alongside the more traditional instrumentation and roots-oriented choices.
Kelsea Ballerini — Patterns
Holler describes this 15-song collection as reflective and empowering, with a country-pop style. It is the clearest pop-country selection here: a useful counterpoint to records whose appeal comes from more overtly traditional or roots-based sounds.

Beyoncé — Cowboy Carter
Holler included the album, and Associated Press music writer Maria Sherman selected it among AP’s top albums of 2024, framing it as a country-relevant work while acknowledging Beyoncé’s resistance to a fixed genre label. Sherman called it the year’s best country release “and then some,” describing a 78-minute, 27-track album that draws on Black and brown performers central to country’s history and gives visibility to often-overlooked progenitors. That is AP’s editorial judgment, not a consensus award. Its scale and cultural argument make it a significant crossover entry in any discussion of country music that year.
Ella Langley — hungover
Both Holler and Country Now included Langley’s debut. Country Now describes it as a 14-track album released August 2, 2024, and connects its visibility with the success of “You Look Like You Love Me.” It brings a newer mainstream-country voice into a shortlist otherwise spanning established stars and roots-focused artists.

- One of the most prolific, self-directed creative forces in country's modern era
Adeem the Artist — Anniversary, The Deslondes — Roll It Out, and Hurray for the Riff Raff — The Past Is Still Alive
Stereogum’s selections widen the frame beyond the most visible mainstream names. These three records sit in the roots and country-adjacent part of the conversation; their inclusion reflects Stereogum’s editorial choices, not a claim that every listener or publication would classify them identically. They are good next stops for anyone who wants a broader picture of the year’s Americana and roots landscape.

For more mainstream country options, Country Now also included Kenny Chesney’s BORN, Scotty McCreery’s Rise & Fall, Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons and Lainey Wilson’s Whirlwind. These are additional editorial picks from that publication, not a ranked second tier.

Keep the award-year calendar separate
A Grammy eligibility year is not the same thing as a calendar-year release list. The Recording Academy says the 2024 ceremony covered recordings released from October 1, 2022, through September 15, 2023. That window is useful context when comparing awards coverage with albums discussed in 2024 year-end lists; it does not define which albums were released during calendar 2024.
