There is no single, objectively best cookbook of 2024. The strongest recommendations come from different kinds of judgment: year-end editorial lists, panels of food writers and cooks, and award programs. Use those sources to build a shortlist, then choose for the way you actually cook—whether that means weeknight meals, baking, beginner guidance, a particular cuisine, ambitious projects, or a book worth reading cover to cover.
What “best cookbook” means in the 2024 lists
Two prominent year-end roundups offer useful starting points, but they are not interchangeable rankings or controlled tests of every cookbook published that year.
- The Washington Post’s “The 14 best cookbooks of 2024”, published December 2, 2024, says its author cooked from every book on the list while qualifying that she could not vouch for every recipe. The feature also points to books with photography, personal stories and history, as well as a beginner-oriented book about how to think about food.
- Bon Appétit’s “The 19 Best Cookbooks of 2024” describes a selection drawing on Bon Appétit and Epicurious staff, together with a panel of chefs, authors and creators.
The Washington Post feature captures the year’s appetite for variety with the line, “The cookbook genre has long been mired in sameness, but in 2024, the best cookbooks are trying something new.” That is an editorial framing, not proof that every book on either list suits every cook. Treat the lists as places to discover candidates, then assess each book against your own kitchen, time and interests.
Choose by the way you want to use the book
Before settling on a title, decide what you want the cookbook to do. A book for reliable dinners has a different job from one built around baking technique, cultural context or a weekend project.
#1 Best Overall
For weeknight cooking
Look for recipes with manageable preparation, ingredients you can find locally and methods that fit your usual schedule. Scan the recipe format for hands-on time, make-ahead steps and whether a meal depends on several components. A beautiful book is less useful for everyday cooking if its recipes routinely require long projects or hard-to-source ingredients.
For baking
Check whether the book explains technique, measurements and cues for doneness, not just ingredient lists. Consider the equipment and precision required, and whether the recipes are aimed at casual home bakers or readers ready for more involved work.
Rank #2
For a cuisine or region
Decide whether you want a broad introduction, a focused regional collection or a personal perspective on a culinary tradition. Read the introduction and recipe headnotes where available: they can show how much cultural, historical or family context accompanies the cooking.
For ambitious projects
Some cookbooks are most rewarding when you have time for multi-step recipes, specialized equipment or advance preparation. Check the recipe sequence and ingredient lists before buying. A project book can be an excellent fit for a curious cook even if it is not the right tool for hurried dinners.
Rank #3
For beginner guidance
Beginners often benefit most from clear explanations of foundational skills, ingredient choices and how to adapt when a recipe does not go exactly to plan. The Washington Post’s 2024 feature specifically notes a beginner-focused recommendation that teaches readers how to think about food, rather than only supplying recipes.
For reading as well as cooking
If you want a book to read between meals, prioritize photography, essays, personal stories, history and strong recipe headnotes. The Washington Post describes these qualities among the kinds of recommendations in its roundup. They can make a cookbook valuable even when you do not cook every recipe.
Rank #4
Use awards as a separate signal
Award results can add another kind of recognition, but award year and publication year are not the same thing. Check the eligibility period before treating an award winner as a new release from that year.
IACP Cookbook Awards
The International Association of Culinary Professionals announced its 2024 award winners at a ceremony on September 26, 2024. IACP says the program recognizes authors, publishers and other contributors through categories that include an overall Cookbook of the Year. Its current program description lists 16 categories; that is the organization’s present description, not a count to assume for every award cycle. See the 2024 winners and the Cookbook Awards program description.
Best Value
James Beard Book Awards
The James Beard Foundation’s 2024 Book Awards covered qualifying food and beverage books published in the United States in 2023. The World Central Kitchen Cookbook was among the winners, but that recognition does not make it a book first published in 2024. Consult the Foundation’s 2024 eligibility announcement, winner announcement and contemporaneous results PDF for the award-cycle details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to narrow your shortlist
- Name your main use. Choose one priority—everyday meals, baking, a cuisine or region, beginner instruction, ambitious cooking, or reading pleasure.
- Check the publication date. Confirm that the book itself was published in 2024 if that matters to you; an award announced in 2024 may recognize a 2023 book.
- Inspect several recipes. Compare ingredient availability, prep demands, equipment and the kind of skill the instructions assume.
- Check the book’s context. Read the introduction and sample headnotes to see whether you want a practical reference, a narrative experience, or both.
- Interpret the recommendation carefully. A year-end list or award is evidence of editorial or professional recognition, not a guarantee that every recipe has been tested in the same way or will work for your needs.
A secondary mirror attributes a New York Times year-end selection to its Food and Cooking staff and says the team read and cooked from dozens of that year’s books. Because that account is not the primary article, use it only as corroboration rather than as the basis for a title-by-title comparison: the secondary mirror.
