These three picks show the range, from Pink Floyd’s character-centered plot to The Beatles’ framing conceit and Kendrick Lamar’s cinematic Compton storytelling.
What makes an album a concept album?
A concept album is not limited to a record with a beginning-to-end plot. Some albums follow a character or sequence of events; others create unity through recurring themes, a framing device, sound, or a carefully shaped album-length experience. Bloomsbury Academic’s publisher description of The Concept Album in Popular Music reflects that broad scope.
For choosing among them, consider how tightly the songs connect, whether the sequencing and transitions matter, what musical world the album creates, and how rewarding it is to hear as a whole. “Best” is a matter of judgment, not a universal ranking: Apple Music describes its own 100 Best Albums list as an editorial statement independent of streaming numbers.
Three concept albums to start with
| Album | Kind of cohesion | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Pink Floyd, The Wall (1979) | A character-centered story and recurring metaphor | A rock album with an unfolding plot |
| The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) | A framing conceit and imagined band identity | A unified artistic world without one continuous story |
| Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city (2012) | Personal, place-centered storytelling with a cinematic frame | A modern hip-hop album built around narrative |
Pink Floyd — The Wall
Why it qualifies
Of these three, The Wall is the clearest example of a plotted, character-centered concept album. Pink Floyd describes it as Roger Waters’ partly autobiographical story about Pink, a rock star who builds a metaphorical wall from painful experiences involving family, school, teachers, and relationships. The narrative traces the wall’s construction and collapse, while leaving open whether reconciliation breaks the cycle.

- Made in China
What the full listen offers
The recurring wall gives the album a central image that binds its personal history and dramatic arc. Pink Floyd dates the album to November 1979 and credits Waters with the concept, realized with artist Gerald Scarfe. The band’s official album page documents the story and lists editions including a 180-gram LP and a two-CD release.
The Beatles — Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Why it qualifies
Sgt. Pepper’s is better understood as a framing conceit and broad artistic project than as a single story. The imagined Edwardian-era band gives the album an identity, but the songs draw on varied inspirations—including a Victorian circus poster, a cereal commercial, a child’s drawing, a news report, and Hindu teachings. Not every song advances one plot.

What the full listen offers
The album’s appeal as a whole comes from entering its created world and hearing how varied material sits within that frame. The Beatles’ official anniversary account says the idea began when Paul McCartney misheard roadie Mal Evans asking for salt and pepper. Released June 1, 1967, it was recorded with George Martin using standard four-track equipment. Martin described the approach this way: “We were into another kind of art form where you were putting something down on tape that could only be done on tape.” The sessions took more than 400 hours in Abbey Road Studio 2 and wrapped in April 1967, according to the official anniversary account.
Kendrick Lamar — good kid, m.A.A.d city
Why it qualifies
Kendrick Lamar’s album makes its narrative ambition explicit: Apple Music labels it “A Short Film by Kendrick Lamar.” Its theatrical approach begins with a collective prayer and unfolds through deeply personal stories rooted in Compton. It is a strong choice for listeners who want an album-length narrative in modern hip-hop rather than classic rock.

- Choose The Wall for a rock story centered on one character and a recurring metaphor.
- Choose Sgt. Pepper’s for a shared artistic world and framing idea rather than a continuous plot.
- Choose good kid, m.A.A.d city for personal, place-centered storytelling presented with a cinematic frame.
If you are still deciding, start with the kind of cohesion you care about most—plot, theme, musical world, or sequencing. A concept album can make the complete listen feel purposeful without requiring every song to belong to one storyline.
