The best capture card depends on what you need to capture, what your display should show, and which computer and software will handle the stream. For high-refresh external capture, consider the Elgato 4K X or AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1; for an internal desktop installation, consider AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575). If 1080p60 or 4K60 is enough, a less demanding workflow may suit you better. Compare capture and passthrough separately: a card’s advertised display mode does not guarantee the same mode reaches your streaming software.
What to decide before buying
A capture card takes video and audio from a console or gaming PC and sends a copy to a computer for streaming or recording. Passthrough sends gameplay onward to a display. Elgato describes a card as sitting between the source and display, but the signal sent to the display and the signal sent to capture software can differ. Start with your intended capture mode, then verify passthrough and compatibility for your exact setup. Elgato’s buying guide, last updated 2025-12-18, also recommends considering the source, portability, and frame rate.
- Capture target: Decide whether 1080p60 is sufficient or whether you need 4K60 or a higher frame rate. Distinguish the captured signal from passthrough to the display.
- Source and display: Check the console or gaming PC, monitor or TV, and every connection in between. HDMI 2.1 modes depend on the whole chain, not just the card.
- Host and connection: External USB models can work with laptops if the host and port meet requirements. Internal PCIe cards require a desktop with a compatible free slot.
- Software and operating system: A maximum capture mode may depend on a vendor app and a specific OS. Verify support in the app you will actually use, including OBS where relevant.
- HDR: Check the exact format, OS, resolution, frame rate, and software combination. HDR passthrough is not proof of HDR capture in every mode.
- Audio and chat: Plan how game audio, microphone commentary, and party chat will reach the recording or stream. Support varies by model and platform.
Capture-card picks by workflow
These are workflow-specific candidates, not results of a common hands-on comparison across all models. Manufacturers’ specifications describe supported modes, often with software or signal-chain conditions; PC Gamer’s “best overall” label is that publication’s editorial judgment.
| Workflow | Candidate | What the sources establish | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| External capture above 4K60 or high-refresh play | Elgato 4K X | Elgato describes it as an external USB, HDMI 2.1 card with capture up to 4K144 and high-refresh passthrough. Its buyer guide positions it for capture above 4K60 and play at 120Hz or higher. | Elgato says HDR cannot be captured at all resolution and frame-rate combinations. Do not assume 4K144 HDR capture works with every source or app. |
| External HDMI 2.1 capture with app-dependent modes | AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA 2.1 (GC553G2) | AVerMedia lists capture up to 4K144 through Streaming Center on Windows and up to 4K60 through OBS on Mac, alongside HDMI 2.1 passthrough modes. | The host USB-C port and HDMI devices must support the intended mode. AVerMedia says DSC displays may limit passthrough to 4K120. Capture limits differ by software and OS. |
| External 4K60-oriented workflow | AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra S (GC553Pro) | PC Gamer names it best overall in its roundup and lists capture up to 4K60, plus 1440p144 and 1080p240 modes. | Attribute the “best overall” label to PC Gamer, not to a universal consensus. The roundup says some advanced 4K functionality depends on Streaming Center software. |
| Portable 4K60 capture | Elgato 4K S | Elgato’s buyer guide says it captures up to 4K60 with HDR and works with Windows, macOS, and iPad. The guide identifies analog audio input for party chat as a differentiator. | This is manufacturer guidance. Verify the specific source, application, and HDR mode you plan to use. |
| Internal desktop installation | AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 2.1 (GC575) | AVerMedia lists PCIe Gen 3 x4, HDMI 2.1 input and output, Windows 10/11 requirements, 4K144 capture in Streaming Center, and 4K60 among its capture modes. | It is not portable. Check for a compatible free slot, host specifications, HDMI chain, and capture app. AVerMedia says DSC displays may limit passthrough to 4K120. |
How to check a headline mode against your setup
- Write down the source output and display target. Note the console or PC resolution, refresh rate, and HDR setting, plus what you expect to see on the monitor or TV.
- Separate capture from passthrough. Find the manufacturer’s mode table for both paths. A high-refresh passthrough claim does not prove that the computer receives the same resolution or frame rate.
- Confirm the host connection. Check the exact USB port and host requirements for an external card, or the PCIe slot and system requirements for an internal card. For the GC553G2, AVerMedia calls for USB 3.2 Gen 2 or above for the host connection.
- Confirm the app and OS for the mode. For example, AVerMedia ties GC553G2 capture up to 4K144 to Streaming Center on Windows, while its listed OBS mode on Mac is up to 4K60. Do not transfer a limit from one app or OS to another.
- Check the entire HDMI chain for HDMI 2.1 modes. Source, card, cables, and display all matter. AVerMedia recommends using the supplied cables for the GC553G2 and notes a DSC-display passthrough limit of 4K120.
- Test audio routing before going live. Confirm that game audio, commentary, and any party-chat audio appear in the software’s meters and recording. Use the model’s supported inputs and platform-specific instructions rather than assuming chat audio is captured automatically.
HDR capture: passthrough is not enough
HDR is a format and compatibility question, not a checkbox that can be inferred from an HDR passthrough claim. Elgato warns that 4K X HDR capture is not available at every resolution and frame rate. OBS’s HDR guide, dated 2022-08-02, says OBS 28.0 introduced HDR recording and streaming, and that external HDR capture needs a device supporting a 10-bit format such as P010. That guide describes device HDR capture on Windows and lists tested devices including the Elgato 4K X and HD60 X; treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee of current compatibility. Check the current OBS and card documentation for your specific mode. OBS: Video Capture Devices with HDR support.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Common buying and setup problems
- The display works, but the stream looks lower resolution or refresh rate: Passthrough and capture are separate paths. Check the software’s input settings and the card’s capture-mode table rather than relying on the passthrough specification.
- The advertised maximum is unavailable: The mode may require a particular app, OS, host port, firmware, or source/display combination. Verify each dependency; for GC553G2, 4K144 capture is listed for Streaming Center on Windows, not as a universal OBS mode.
- HDR is missing or appears incorrect in software: Check support for the device, 10-bit format, OS, resolution, frame rate, and capture app. A display receiving HDR does not establish that the computer is capturing HDR.
- Passthrough tops out at 4K120 with a DSC display: AVerMedia calls out this limitation for the GC553G2 and GC575. Check the model’s current compatibility notes and display configuration.
- No party chat in the recording: Recheck the platform’s audio-output and chat routing, the card’s audio inputs, and the capture app’s selected sources. Analog chat input is identified as a differentiator for Elgato 4K S, but exact setup still depends on the source and app.
- An internal card does not fit or install: The GC575 requires a compatible PCIe Gen 3 x4 slot and a Windows 10/11 system meeting AVerMedia’s requirements. Confirm the desktop’s available slot and host specifications first.
