The best starting point for Batman and Bane’s defining clash is Batman: Knightfall Vol. 1 – New Edition. Start with Batman: Prelude to Knightfall if you want Bane’s origin and the build-up first; choose Batman: City of Bane: The Complete Collection for a later story in which Bane’s forces control Gotham. “Best” depends on which part of Bane’s story you want to read.

Start with Bane’s origin and the buildup
Batman: Prelude to Knightfall is the most useful choice if you want context before the confrontation. DC’s collection includes Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1, which introduces Bane, followed by issues depicting his plan for Gotham and Batman’s mounting strain. The edition was released September 5, 2018. DC’s edition listing confirms its contents.

Read the defining clash in Knightfall Vol. 1
Batman: Knightfall Vol. 1 – New Edition is the direct pick for the central Batman-versus-Bane story. In DC’s description, criminals escape Arkham, Batman wears himself down responding to the crisis, and Bane eventually confronts him and breaks his back. The collection spans several Batman-related titles rather than one series alone. DC released this edition April 25, 2012. Check its contents and edition details before choosing a copy.
Know what “the full Knightfall saga” means
Vol. 1 is not the entire Knightfall story. The larger saga continues through Knightquest and KnightsEnd. If you want the broader successor-Batman storyline, look for a complete saga collection rather than assuming the first volume contains all three parts. DC Universe Infinite describes the saga and lists the issues in its sections: Knightfall collection.

Choose City of Bane for a later takeover story
Batman: City of Bane: The Complete Collection is a separate, later-era story, not a continuation of the original Knightfall volumes. DC says it collects Batman #75–85 and frames the story around Bane’s forces governing Gotham before Batman returns. The paperback edition listed by Penguin Random House is 344 pages, ISBN 9781779505958, published December 15, 2020. Verify format and availability with the seller, since those can change. Batman Vol. 13: The City of Bane Part 2 collects Batman #80–85 and Annual #4. It is the concluding portion, not a substitute with the same contents as the complete collection, which covers #75–85. Check the issue list when comparing editions. DC’s listing for Part 2 gives its contents.
