1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a pre-recorded stereo video, use 48 kHz audio in the media file and AAC-LC as a practical codec choice. YouTube recommends 48 kHz for uploaded media and lists AAC-LC among its recommended upload codecs. Live encoder settings are a separate matter: the supported codec and sample-rate guidance depends on whether you send the stream by RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, and whether the program is stereo or 5.1.
Choose settings for the stage you are configuring
A pre-recorded YouTube Live broadcast has two distinct stages: encoding the video file and sending audio into YouTube as a live stream. Do not treat YouTube’s uploaded-media recommendations as live-ingest requirements, or the live encoder settings as a special rule for every pre-recorded file. YouTube’s official guidance documents each stage separately; it does not state a bespoke audio rule for a prerecorded file played out as a Live event.
| Context | Listed audio codecs | Sample-rate guidance | Other relevant setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended uploaded media encoding | AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio | 48 kHz | MP4 is the recommended container. YouTube upload encoding settings |
| RTMP/RTMPS live ingest | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 | 5.1 is supported only with AAC; 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1. YouTube live encoder settings |
| HLS live ingest | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 | 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1. YouTube HLS ingest guidance |
| Upload troubleshooting reference | AAC-LC | 44.1 or 48 kHz | 128–256 kbps. YouTube upload troubleshooting |
For a stereo pre-recorded program, export at 48 kHz
Use AAC-LC for a conventional stereo mix
For the uploaded media file, 48 kHz is YouTube’s recommended audio sample rate, and AAC-LC is one of the listed codecs. That makes 48 kHz AAC-LC a sensible default for a standard stereo program. Keep the actual channel layout stereo if the source mix is stereo; changing the sample rate or codec does not turn it into surround sound.
YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance also lists AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and sample rates of 44.1 or 48 kHz. Treat those figures as upload troubleshooting context, not as a universal live-stream requirement or a guarantee of better sound at the upper end.

Do not upmix stereo to use 5.1 settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives separate settings for stereo and 5.1. A stereo source should remain stereo unless you have a genuine 5.1 mix and a workflow that preserves its channels. Artificially filling surround channels does not create real surround information.
Match live-ingest settings to the protocol and channel layout
RTMP or RTMPS
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced live settings specify 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. The documented audio bitrate is 128 kbps for stereo or 384 kbps for 5.1; YouTube specifies that 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. These are live-ingest settings, distinct from the 48 kHz recommendation for the uploaded file.

HLS
For HLS ingestion, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3, with the same channel-dependent sample-rate and bitrate guidance: 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1. HLS uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s HLS instructions also specify TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlist limits, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These protocol details matter when configuring HLS, but they do not change the recommended upload-file sample rate.
Test the actual playback path before the event
- Export the file using the settings for the media stage. For a conventional stereo upload, use 48 kHz and a listed upload codec such as AAC-LC.
- Configure the live encoder for the selected ingest protocol. Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, then apply the corresponding codec and sample-rate guidance for stereo or 5.1.
- Run a test with the real file and intended setup. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health and quality.
- Listen and inspect rather than relying on labels alone. Check that left and right channels map correctly, the audio is not clipping, sound stays synchronized with picture, and there is no unintended silence.
A nominally correct codec and sample rate cannot by themselves confirm that the complete path—from file playback through the encoder and protocol to YouTube—sounds and behaves as intended.

Troubleshoot common audio problems
The file uploads or plays but the live encoder rejects audio
Check which stage’s settings you applied. A file encoded with YouTube’s recommended upload settings is not necessarily using the live-ingest settings required by the encoder. Confirm the protocol and use its listed codec options and channel-specific sample rate.
Stereo audio is silent, distorted, or mapped incorrectly
Confirm that the source is actually stereo and that the encoder is sending the intended left and right channels. Check for clipping and unintended silence in a test stream. Do not select 5.1 settings for a stereo mix merely because 5.1 uses a 48 kHz live sample rate.

The audio is out of sync
Test the actual prerecorded file through the same playback and encoder path planned for the event, then inspect the YouTube preview. If the offset appears only after encoding or streaming, isolate the stage where it begins rather than assuming the file’s sample rate is the cause.
The configuration uses HLS but behaves differently from an RTMP setup
Verify HLS-specific segment and playlist requirements as well as the audio codec and channel layout. HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so the two protocols should not be treated as interchangeable encoder menus.

Keep a pre-recorded stream running without a home computer
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its stream plays the uploaded file; it does not broadcast from a camera. StreamNeo does not replace the encoding guidance above: prepare audio appropriately in the media file, then use the service to keep the YouTube stream running from the cloud.
