For a genre-led starting point, try SAKAMOTO DAYS for action-comedy, The Summer Hikaru Died for mystery, Delicious in Dungeon for fantasy-adventure, or The Apothecary Diaries for mystery-drama. These are editorial recommendations, not winners of a genre poll: the available 2025 genre data measures European household preferences for films and series, while the anime audience signals come from individual streaming services.
Which TV genres were most popular in 2025?
A 2025 European Commission study found comedy, action/adventure, and crime/mystery/thriller were the most frequently selected film and series genres among European households. The survey asked 22,703 respondents what types of films and series were most popular in their household and allowed up to three selections. It was not an anime poll, did not cover television alone, and should not be read as a global ranking.

Animation is a format or category rather than a single story genre, and the children’s-household figures are a separate finding. The study also recorded anime in open-text “other” answers; that does not make its genre percentages anime-specific.
Anime recommendations by genre
The picks below connect recognizable genre preferences with shows identified as examples by Netflix or supported by service-specific audience data. They are starting points, not a cross-platform ranking of the best anime. Catalogs change and vary by country, so check your local service listings before watching.
#1 Best Overall
Action and comedy: SAKAMOTO DAYS
Choose this if you want action with humor rather than a purely serious fight story. Netflix Tudum describes it as an action story with humor and says it is adapted from Yuto Suzuki’s manga. Part 1 premiered worldwide on Netflix on January 11, 2025, and Part 2 began July 14, 2025.
Netflix’s report on viewing from January through June 2025 records 24 million views for Season 1. That is a Netflix-specific measure for that reporting window, not a count of all viewers or evidence that it was the most popular anime overall.
Rank #2
Mystery: The Summer Hikaru Died
Netflix’s 2025 anime overview identifies this series as a mystery example. It is a straightforward choice if the genre appeal you want is a mystery-centered story; the source’s label is Netflix’s editorial description, not a survey result or an independent genre classification.
Fantasy-adventure: Delicious in Dungeon
For imaginative fantasy with an adventure frame, try Delicious in Dungeon. Netflix describes it as fantasy-adventure in its anime overview, making it a clear fit for readers who want those elements together.

Mystery-drama: The Apothecary Diaries
For a mystery-drama option, The Apothecary Diaries has a notable but platform-bound audience signal: ABEMA’s 2025 annual ranking announcement placed its first and second seasons first and second for average views per episode on ABEMA. Netflix also included the title among anime appearing in its first-half 2025 Global Top 10 (Non-English) list, without giving a view figure in that overview. These are different services and measures; neither establishes a universal anime ranking or proves a “best” verdict.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among these picks
- For action balanced with humor: start with SAKAMOTO DAYS.
- For a mystery-led watch: try The Summer Hikaru Died.
- For a fantasy setting and adventure: choose Delicious in Dungeon.
- For mystery with a drama angle: consider The Apothecary Diaries.
Popularity figures are not interchangeable: Netflix’s title views, Netflix Top 10 appearances, and ABEMA’s per-episode ranking each describe activity on a particular service. The available sources do not establish one comparable 2025 ranking across anime platforms.
