These are the best American football movies to watch, ranked for the way they bring the sport to life on screen—from nonfiction access to high-school drama, team friendship, comedy and the business behind the game. This is an editorial ranking, not a claim of a single objective winner: it weighs filmmaking and performances, how central football is, emotional and cultural staying power, variety, and critical and audience reception. Soccer films are outside this list.

How this ranking works

Published rankings differ because they measure different things. Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial guide, published September 9, 2026, says, “To create our list of the best football movies, we use just one metric: the Tomatometer.” Its current ordering therefore reflects critics’ reviews, not a blended verdict on what every viewer will enjoy. JustWatch’s U.S. list, updated July 27, 2026, uses an editorial approach that emphasizes familiar stories, underdogs and the emotional struggle around the sport.

This list takes a broader view. It favors strong filmmaking and performances, meaningful football content, lasting emotional or cultural impact, and a range of nonfiction and fiction. Reviews and audience response are useful signals, not the only test. The result includes films about fans, communities and sports management as well as athletes and games. The titles below are ranked as recommendations, not as a historical or statistical league table.

The best American football movies, ranked

1. Undefeated (2011)

Documentary · High-school football

For a nonfiction starting point, this documentary follows a struggling Memphis high-school team. It earns the top spot here because the team and the challenges around its season provide the film’s foundation, rather than serving as a backdrop for a fictional hero’s arc. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it first in its September 2026 football-movie guide, reporting a 96% Tomatometer and 89% Popcornmeter when the guide was accessed; that is the site’s metric-based result, not a universal measure of quality. Choose it for close-in documentary storytelling and the stakes of a season.

2. Friday Night Lights (2004)

Drama · High-school football and community

This feature centers on a Texas town’s intense attachment to its high-school team. Football matters both on the field and as a force shaping community identity, making it a strong choice if you want the sport to feel larger than the players’ immediate ambitions. Rotten Tomatoes placed it fifth in its 2026 guide, with an 82% Tomatometer at the time shown, and JustWatch included it in its top five.

3. Go Tigers! (2001)

Documentary · High-school football and local culture

This documentary follows a season of the Massillon Tigers, making the team’s place in its community part of the story. Its appeal is the view of football as a shared local identity, not just a string of game highlights. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it third in its 2026 guide and showed an 85% Tomatometer. It is a natural follow-up to Undefeated if you want another nonfiction film, but with a distinct community-and-tradition emphasis.

4. Remember the Titans (2000)

Drama · Team and coaching

The film dramatizes an integration-era team and the conflicts around its coaches and players. Its focus on a group learning to function together has helped make it a familiar team story, and JustWatch ranked it first in its U.S. list. Treat it as dramatized storytelling rather than a documentary account: the available material does not establish every historical detail shown on screen. Pick it for a crowd-pleasing team drama built around unity and conflict.

5. Rudy (1993)

Drama · College football and underdog ambition

Rudy follows a Notre Dame hopeful whose disadvantages are central to the underdog appeal. It is less about a broad portrait of a program than about persistence and the desire to earn a place on a team. The rankings show how taste can differ: Rotten Tomatoes placed it seventh in its 2026 guide, at 80% Tomatometer, while JustWatch ranked it second. Choose it for a classic perseverance story rather than documentary realism.

6. Brian’s Song (1971)

Drama · Teammates and friendship

Built around the relationship between teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, this drama puts friendship at the center of its football story. Its place here recognizes a different kind of sports-film payoff: the bond between players, not simply the outcome of a season. JustWatch’s U.S. list ranks it fifth. It suits viewers looking for an emotional character story more than a game-by-game sports spectacle.

7. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Drama · Sports business

Football enters this film through the work of a sports agent confronting a crisis of conscience. That makes it a more football-adjacent choice than a team drama, but a valuable one for seeing the sport through athlete representation and the business around a player’s career. Rotten Tomatoes ranked it fourth in its 2026 guide, showing an 86% Tomatometer. Choose it if the people and decisions around the game interest you as much as what happens on the field.

8. Big Fan (2009)

Drama · Fandom

Rather than follow players, Big Fan centers on a New York Giants fan. The film broadens the list’s perspective by asking what football means to a devoted supporter. Rotten Tomatoes placed it second in its 2026 ranking and showed an 85% Tomatometer. It is the pick for viewers more interested in the intensity of fandom than in locker-room camaraderie or a team’s season.

9. The Waterboy (1998)

Comedy · Football spectacle

This comedy offers a deliberately heightened alternative to the earnest underdog and community dramas above. Rotten Tomatoes categorizes it as Rotten by critic ranking, while noting audience approval as a counterpoint—a useful reminder that a critics’ list and a crowd-pleasing watch list need not agree. Choose it for broad comic energy rather than realism or documentary insight.

10. Any Given Sunday (1999)

Drama · Professional football

For a more heightened take on professional football, Any Given Sunday brings spectacle and intensity to the list. Rotten Tomatoes also categorizes it as Rotten in its critic-based guide, despite its place among recognizable football movies and the audience approval noted by the guide. It is a good fit if you want a forceful, less understated sports drama rather than a nonfiction look at how a team operates.

Choose by mood and what you want from the sport

If you want… Start with Why
Nonfiction access to a team Undefeated or Go Tigers! Both are documentaries; one follows a struggling Memphis high-school team, the other a season of the Massillon Tigers.
A town’s relationship with football Friday Night Lights or Go Tigers! The films connect high-school football to community identity, with one dramatized and one documentary approach.
An underdog story Rudy Its central character is a Notre Dame hopeful whose disadvantages drive the appeal.
Team bonds and emotion Remember the Titans or Brian’s Song One is a dramatized team-and-coaching conflict; the other centers on teammates’ friendship.
Football beyond the field Jerry Maguire or Big Fan One looks at sports representation; the other at a supporter’s devotion.
Comedy or heightened spectacle The Waterboy or Any Given Sunday These offer broad comedy and intense fictional drama, respectively, rather than a documentary perspective.

Where to watch these films

Streaming, rental and purchase listings vary by country and change over time. JustWatch’s U.S. guide displayed availability checks dated October 7, 2026, including DVD purchase options for Remember the Titans and other titles. Those listings establish what its U.S. page showed on that date, not what is available now or in another region. Check a current listing for your country before choosing a film; no platform is named here as a guaranteed current option.

Why football-movie rankings disagree

A Tomatometer ranking sorts films by critics’ reviews; an editorial list can instead weigh familiarity, emotional pull, underdog arcs, genre variety or the film’s cultural staying power. A documentary and a comedy are also trying to do different things. That is why a critic-favored title such as Undefeated can lead one guide while an audience-favorite drama such as Remember the Titans leads another. The useful question is not only which film ranks first, but what kind of football story you want to watch.

This list is specifically about American football, also called gridiron football. It does not cover association football, commonly called soccer in the United States; Rotten Tomatoes maintains a separate soccer-movie guide at 52 Best Soccer Movies, Ranked by Tomatometer.
