The X4 is also named for the app modes. RICOH THETA X is another possibility for wireless RTMP/RTMPS streaming, but the available official information does not establish an equally complete, current setup guide for that model.
Choose by the live workflow and the picture viewers will receive—not by the camera’s maximum recording resolution. An 8K recording specification does not mean the camera streams live in 8K.
Which 360 camera is best for live streaming?
For a documented path to either an interactive spherical stream or a conventional reframed composition, start with the Insta360 X5. Insta360’s tutorial lists both the X5 and X4 for app-based 360 Live and Reframe Live streaming to Kwai, Facebook, YouTube, and RTMP. The X5 also has an official wired webcam guide for computer streaming through OBS.
This is a recommendation based on manufacturer documentation, not a claim that the cameras have been tested side by side. If your priority is wireless RTMP/RTMPS, the RICOH THETA X is worth investigating, but verify the exact camera setup and platform support before buying.

360 Live: let viewers explore the scene
A 360 live stream is intended to present a spherical view that viewers can look around in a compatible player or platform experience. It suits a documentary setting where the surroundings are part of the story: for example, a walk-through, a location, or a performance space. Before committing, confirm that your chosen destination displays the 360 stream as intended; a platform accepting a live feed does not by itself guarantee an interactive viewing experience.
Reframe Live: send a directed, flat composition
Reframe Live presents a conventional view selected from the camera’s 360 capture rather than asking viewers to explore the full sphere. It can be a better fit when you want to guide attention or when your audience will watch on a standard video player. Check the app’s available framing controls and decide who will operate them during the broadcast.

What resolution can you expect?
Do not use recording resolution as a promise about live output. Insta360’s product specification lists 8K 360 recording for X5, but the separate X5 OBS tutorial specifies 2880×1440 at 30 fps for the 2:1 panoramic webcam output. Those figures describe different modes; the 8K recording figure does not establish 8K live streaming.
For THETA X, Ricoh’s wireless streaming page describes 4K/2K output through its plug-in, while its archived camera specification lists the live-stream format as H.264 video and linear PCM audio. These references do not supply a comparable, model-specific output matrix across platforms, so check the current instructions for your intended destination and mode.

How to live stream with an Insta360 X5
App-based 360 Live or Reframe Live
- Check compatibility first. Open Insta360’s X5 Live Stream Tutorial and confirm its current app and camera firmware requirements. Version numbers in support instructions can change.
- Prepare the destination. The tutorial lists Kwai, Facebook, YouTube, and RTMP, and calls for platform account authorization. If using a custom RTMP destination, have its current server address and stream key ready.
- Connect the camera to the Insta360 app and select the live mode your audience needs: 360 Live for a spherical presentation or Reframe Live for a flat view.
- Authorize the platform and configure the stream using the app’s current prompts. Confirm the destination, title, and privacy settings before going live.
- Keep the app open in the foreground and the connection active. Insta360’s guide explicitly says: “During the live stream, please keep the app running in the foreground.” Switching apps, losing connectivity, or interrupting the session can disrupt this workflow.
Wired webcam streaming through OBS
- Connect the X5 to a computer by wire and use it as a webcam, following Insta360’s current X5 OBS streaming guide. This is a separate workflow from streaming through the phone app.
- Open OBS and select the X5 webcam source. Configure the output for 2880×1440 at 30 fps when you want the guide’s specified 2:1 panoramic output.
- Set up your streaming destination in OBS. Use the platform’s current account connection or stream-server details and key. Verify the destination’s live settings before starting the broadcast.
- Check framing and audio in a private test. Confirm that the panoramic image appears in the intended format and that the audio source you need is selected. The cited setup guidance does not establish comparative microphone performance or every compatible audio accessory.
- Start the stream from OBS and monitor both OBS and the destination for a stable connection and correct playback.
Insta360 says its 360 cameras do not support HDMI output for live streaming. The documented computer route here is a wired webcam connection, not HDMI.
What to check before buying
- Exact model and firmware: a live-stream feature on one camera does not establish the same support on another. The X6 guidance is specifically conflicting.
- Viewer experience: decide whether viewers need an interactive 360 scene or a directed flat frame.
- Destination: confirm platform support for the exact mode, account, and region, especially if your workflow depends on custom RTMP.
- Power, heat, and connectivity: plan for sustained power and a reliable network. Ricoh warns that high temperature can stop capture; the available documentation does not establish comparable runtime or thermal limits for the listed models.
- Audio: determine how you will capture the sound you need and verify compatibility for any external microphone or accessory before purchasing.
- Mounting and placement: a stable mount can help with fixed installations, but verify that any mount or cable fits your exact camera and setup.
- Current price and availability: check the seller and manufacturer for current regional listings. Comparable current prices are not established here.
Common problems and fixes
The app stream will not start
Check that your camera firmware and Insta360 app meet the tutorial’s current requirements, that you authorized the correct destination account, and that the network is active. Reopen the current X5 instructions if the app interface or supported platforms have changed.

The stream stops when you leave the app
The X5 app guide requires the app to remain in the foreground during the live stream. Keep the phone awake and avoid switching away from the app while broadcasting.
The OBS image is not the expected panoramic shape
Check that you selected the X5 webcam source and set 2880×1440 at 30 fps for the guide’s 2:1 panoramic output. Do not select 8K on the assumption that the camera’s recording specification applies to live webcam output.

The X6 appears supported in one guide but not another
Treat X6 live support as unresolved until current firmware notes or direct Insta360 support confirms your exact app-based workflow. A tutorial describing modes is not enough to settle the conflict with the general FAQ.
A THETA X stream ends during use
Ricoh warns that shooting may stop automatically if camera temperature rises. Follow Ricoh’s operating guidance, avoid obstructing the camera, and verify expected operating conditions for your setup.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Before streaming a performance, documentary footage, music, or material recorded at a venue, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for both the video and audio. A camera’s ability to send a live feed does not grant permission to broadcast what it captures. YouTube may apply its copyright and live-stream policies to the stream; review the current rules for your channel and the content you plan to show.
