Bernard Hill, the British actor known internationally as Théoden in The Lord of the Rings films and Captain Edward Smith in Titanic, died on May 5, 2024, aged 79. His career also included the acclaimed British television drama Boys from the Blackstuff.

Who did Bernard Hill play in The Lord of the Rings?
Hill played Théoden, the king of Rohan, in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and returned as the character in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Théoden’s journey from an enfeebled ruler to a leader who rallies his people made the role one of Hill’s best-known screen performances.

Before those major film roles, Hill was widely recognized in Britain for playing Yosser Hughes in the 1982 television drama Boys from the Blackstuff. The Guardian’s obituary also notes his theatre work and BAFTA nominations, reflecting a career broader than his international blockbusters.
