Set in New Delhi in 1993, it is a deliberate, atmospheric alternative to action-led spy films: its strongest case rests on the performances of Aparshakti Khurana and Ishwak Singh, though its intrigue can become overworked and its pacing may test viewers looking for momentum.
What is Berlin about?
In Atul Sabharwal’s Hindi thriller, Ashok, a deaf man, is detained on suspicion of being a foreign spy. Intelligence officer Jagdish recruits Pushkin Verma, a sign-language teacher, to help question him. As Pushkin interprets Ashok’s answers, he begins to suspect that the detainee may be a scapegoat. The inquiry grows into a conspiracy involving rival intelligence organizations and a feared assassination plot.
Communication is not a side detail: gesture, interpretation and the possibility of misunderstanding shape both the investigation and the film’s uncertainty over who is telling the truth. The title refers to a Delhi cafe called Berlin, a meeting place for intelligence agents from several countries.
How well does the slow-burn thriller work?
Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in describes the film as “a double-weave of a conspiracy thriller and a study of political currents intersecting with personal ambition.” The post-Cold War setting gives that political tension a particular mood. The Berlin Wall has fallen, yet characters remain drawn to the clarity of the divided blocs that came before. Ramnath compares the atmosphere to John Le Carré novels and the foreboding to Alan J. Pakula films; these are critical comparisons, not adaptations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The muted visual palette and atmospheric Delhi locations help sustain the unease. Ramnath writes that “Berlin is gripping in its own fashion, skillfully deploying deafness as both metaphor and weapon.” The film’s appeal lies less in spy spectacle than in the pressure of watching people try to establish what is true through a compromised channel.
Performances and reservations
Khurana’s Pushkin and Singh’s Ashok become the emotional center of the story as secrets emerge while the two men are confined together. Ramnath praises Khurana’s portrayal of an ordinary man drawn into a heroic role, and Singh’s enigmatic, sweet characterization gives Ashok an engaging ambiguity.

The same restraint that gives the film its atmosphere can make the pacing feel too deliberate. The conspiracy sometimes accumulates more layers than it can comfortably carry. Rahul Bose occasionally tips into hyperbole, while Anupriya Goenka’s character has limited room in a story dominated by men.
Who is Berlin for?
Choose it if you enjoy slow-burn espionage, political atmosphere and stories where interpretation matters as much as evidence. It is a less natural fit if you want frequent action or a briskly unfolding mystery. Its distinctive hook is the way it makes an interpreter central to the suspense, not simply a device for translating dialogue.
