Benicio Del Toro and Alicia Silverstone reunite in Reptile, but this time they play longtime spouses rather than kidnapper and victim. The crime thriller puts their shared history inside a murder investigation shaped by deception—a theme director Grant Singer said informed both the characters’ experiences and the film’s storytelling structure. The first-look story was published August 17, 2023, ahead of the film’s September release.
What is Reptile about?
Reptile is a 2023 crime thriller and neo-noir about Detective Tom Nichols, played by Del Toro, investigating the brutal murder of a young real estate agent. Netflix’s synopsis describes Nichols uncovering a web of deception as the case unfolds. The investigation also puts his personal life under pressure.
Singer described deception as more than a plot device: “I wanted to create this multifaceted sense of deception that was both in the experiences of the characters, as well as in the structure of the storytelling. That was something that excited me.” The film’s premise and its approach to storytelling were therefore linked from the outset, rather than treating the mystery as a puzzle separate from the characters.
Why the Del Toro–Silverstone reunion matters
The actors previously appeared together in Excess Baggage (1997), in which Del Toro played Silverstone’s accidental kidnapper. In Reptile, they are longtime spouses: Del Toro plays Detective Tom Nichols, and Silverstone plays Judy Nichols. The change in relationship gives the reunion a different footing, with years of shared screen history behind a couple navigating the strain around Tom’s case.

Singer said the casting felt right after he and Del Toro met Silverstone: “We both felt like she would be perfect for the role.” He added that she would bring the character to life in a “unique, interesting, and authentic way,” and noted the energy of seeing the actors work together after knowing one another for so long. How the first look framed the film’s tone
Singer said he wanted the suspense to coexist with warmth rather than make the film feel “cold and clinical and sterile.” His stated aim was to make it feel “alive and warm and relatable and human,” counterbalancing the unease with something recognizably personal. That intention connects the murder mystery to the Nichols marriage: the story is not only about what the investigation reveals, but also about the people living through its consequences.
Del Toro described Nichols as “a man of destiny” who gets “a second chance,” before “a reckoning occurs.” He said the plot’s unpredictability drew him in, including what he called a couple of “‘Oh, shit’ moments.” These are the actors’ and director’s descriptions of their intentions and responses, not audience or critical assessments of the finished film.
