Ben Stiller says Fresh Horses, the 1988 drama starring Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy, was his favorite movie to make—even though he recalls that it “just tanked.” In a 2025 interview, he described the shoot as a joyful early-career experience and the film as his hoped-for Brat Pack breakthrough.
What movie did Ben Stiller say was his favorite to make?
It was Fresh Horses, a drama released in 1988. Sony Pictures identifies Ringwald and McCarthy as its stars. Sony Pictures’ film page gives the film’s synopsis and 1988 copyright.
Stiller shared the recollection on the August 7, 2025 episode of the Prof G Pod, “Ben Stiller on the Price of Fame and the Power of Failure.” Asked by Scott Galloway about work whose success or failure surprised him, Stiller brought up Fresh Horses. The episode listing gives the release date, and the interview transcript records the exchange.
What did Stiller say about the film?
Stiller recalled that he was starting out in 1987 and thought the movie could be his chance to join the Brat Pack. He remembered filming for three months in a motel in Kentucky, outside Cincinnati, with the cast spending time together and having fun.

His assessment of the film’s performance was blunt: “The movie just tanked and. But it was literally, to this day, my favorite experience ever, making a movie.” He also called the experience “the dream” and said, “It was so much fun.” Both quotations are from the Prof G Pod transcript; the first retains the transcript’s wording and punctuation.
Why did he remember the shoot so fondly?
Stiller’s account contrasts the outcome he recalled with the experience of making the film. He had hoped Fresh Horses would mark a Brat Pack moment early in his career, but he remembered the Kentucky shoot for its camaraderie and pleasure. That is a personal recollection, not a claim that the film succeeded commercially or a verdict on its artistic quality.

Stiller’s reference to starting out and making the movie in 1987 is his account of the production period; the film itself is identified as a 1988 release. His word “tanked” is likewise his characterization. The interview does not provide a box-office figure or quantify the film’s financial performance.
