Spike Jonze directed the spot.
What happens in Instacart’s “Bananas” commercial?
Stiller and Boone begin by singing about choosing bananas to suit their preferences. Boone raises the stakes with a vocal flourish and a flip. Stiller tries to match him, crashes into the drum set, and the music keeps going. Instacart says the spot closes with the line “Bananas just how you like.”
The joke grows out of the contrast between a modest grocery choice and the duo’s grand, competitive stage act. The crash is the punchline to their escalating showmanship, while the banana lyrics keep the ad tied to a practical feature.
What does Preference Picker do?
Preference Picker lets Instacart customers select banana ripeness. In Instacart’s Jan. 28, 2026 launch announcement, the choices were “Not Ripe,” “Almost Ripe,” and “Ripe.” The company said the feature was available across most retailers on the Instacart Marketplace at launch, with availability varying by retailer and location; that statement does not guarantee it is available for every order today. Instacart places Preference Picker within its Grocery Quality Controls, a set of tools it describes as helping guide grocery selection. The same announcement lists Inventory Check, Shopper Notes, Replacement Preferences, Smart Backup, and Second Store Check. The company says Second Store Check is limited to some orders and depends on the item, shopper availability, cost, and other factors. These are Instacart’s descriptions of its tools, not independent assessments of how well they perform.
How the ad’s creative choices build the joke
The retro disco-pop framing makes the product demonstration feel like a stage showdown rather than a conventional grocery explainer. Stiller’s failed attempt to equal Boone’s athletic flourish turns the song into a physical-comedy set piece. Instacart says vintage tube cameras were used to strengthen the retro look.

The campaign also had a longer director’s cut, which Instacart described as having a fuller narrative arc, more singing and dancing, and the same onstage crash. The company released two teasers, “Goals” and “Harmonizing,” alongside the campaign.
Who made the commercial?
Jonze directed the spot. Instacart described it as his first Super Bowl commercial in more than 20 years. Stiller stars as one half of the duo, with Boone, a multi-platinum recording artist, as the other.

Instacart said in its 2026 announcement that bananas were the marketplace’s number-one selling product, with more than 1.8 billion delivered to date, and that they had generated more Shopper Notes than any other item, at more than 32 million. The release did not specify the measurement period for either figure. They are company-reported marketplace figures, not independent measures of the commercial’s reach or success.
