Bella Green, the Perth-born comedian, writer and sex worker, died aged 38 on 25 July 2023. A funeral service was held in Fitzroy North, Victoria, earlier that August, according to PerthNow’s report published on 22 August 2023. The farewell was one part of a life and creative career that Green also explored in comedy, audio and her memoir.
What was reported about Bella Green’s funeral?
PerthNow reported that friends and family gathered in Fitzroy North earlier in August 2023 to farewell Green. The outlet described tributes to someone they could be honest with, and quoted a friend calling her a “chosen sister.”
A memorial tribute quoted in the report said: “Bella leaves behind a large community of grievers whose lives were impacted by all that she was and all that she created.” PerthNow did not identify the tribute’s author, so the wording is best understood as the memorial text reproduced by the outlet, not as a statement attributed to a named speaker.
The report also recalled Green as an energetic entrepreneur from childhood and said attendees used the phrase “the people’s hooker.” Those details are part of PerthNow’s account of the service; the available reporting does not provide an independently corroborated transcript of the ceremony.

How did Green build a career in comedy?
Green was born in Perth and later lived and worked in Melbourne. In a 2019 interview with Seesaw, she said she began performing comedy after telling jokes at the brothel where she worked. She took improv classes to build confidence, then joined the open-mic circuit.
Her live show Bella Green Is Charging For It combined stand-up, sketch and storytelling drawn from her experiences in sex work. It toured fringe festivals in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The show won Best Comedy at Adelaide Fringe in 2020 and had been nominated for Best Comedy at Melbourne Fringe in 2018, according to Books+Publishing.

Green described her aim in that Seesaw interview as “destigmatising sex work,” saying that showing audiences sex workers are regular people was fulfilling. Her comedy made space for both the unusual and the ordinary in the work, rather than presenting sex workers as a single story.
What was the audio project Charging For It?
Charging For It was also the name of an audio documentary project, distinct from Green’s live show. An Australian International Documentary Conference announcement in 2020 described the project as produced by WBMC and Green, featuring conversations with colleagues about the varied realities of sex-industry work.
