Before has the ingredients of a gripping supernatural mystery: a grieving child psychiatrist, a disturbed boy with impossible-seeming memories, and a trail of visions that may connect them across time. Apple TV+’s 10-episode series also has Billy Crystal’s best reason-to-watch performance in years. But its ominous clues ultimately promise more than its conclusion can deliver.
Before has a promising supernatural premise, a genuinely affecting Billy Crystal performance, and enough haunted atmosphere to make its 10-episode season intermittently compelling. But the Apple TV+ series keeps implying that a much larger revelation is approaching without building a mystery substantial enough to support that promise.
Created by Sarah Thorp, Before stars Crystal as Eli Adler, a child psychiatrist struggling to function after his wife’s death. His life changes when he begins treating Noah (Jacobi Jupe), a troubled boy whose disturbing experiences appear to connect with Eli’s own past and with events that may not have a conventional psychological explanation.
The result is a grief drama wrapped in a supernatural mystery. It is often eerie, sometimes visually striking, and anchored by committed performances. It is also repetitive, overextended, and increasingly frustrating in the way it delays meaningful answers. Before is best approached as an atmospheric story about grief and trauma—not as the grand, carefully engineered mystery its early episodes seem to promise.

What is Before about?
Eli is a respected child psychiatrist whose professional distance has been damaged by bereavement. Noah arrives as a difficult and frightened patient, but his behavior soon seems to involve more than childhood trauma or a conventional mental-health crisis. His visions, memories, and apparent connection to Eli draw the psychiatrist into an investigation that becomes increasingly personal.
The series deliberately keeps several explanations in play. Noah’s experiences might be symptoms of mental illness, expressions of trauma, supernatural influence, reincarnation-like memory, or some combination of these possibilities. Eli’s own grief makes it harder for him to remain an objective observer. He is not merely diagnosing Noah; he is also trying to understand whether the boy’s story has anything to do with the losses and unresolved pain that Eli carries himself.
That setup gives Before a useful dramatic tension: its central character is trained to look for clinical explanations but is emotionally vulnerable to explanations that reach beyond the ordinary. The show understands why that conflict is interesting. Its difficulty is sustaining the conflict across 10 episodes without turning every new clue into another postponement.
Billy Crystal gives the series its strongest reason to watch
Crystal is excellent when the role asks him to be quiet, exhausted, and emotionally guarded. Rather than leaning on the comic persona most viewers associate with him, he plays Eli as a man whose grief has become part of his daily posture. His sadness is restrained, which makes the character more credible than he might have been if the performance constantly announced its pain.
That seriousness also helps ground the show’s more implausible material. When Eli sees or hears something unsettling, Crystal gives the moment an internal logic: the character is frightened, but he is also assessing what he is experiencing. The performance makes Eli’s uncertainty feel like a professional crisis as well as a personal one.

Jacobi Jupe has the harder task. Noah must seem vulnerable enough to invite protection and unnerving enough to keep the audience unsure of what he knows. The relationship between Noah and Eli is most effective when the series treats Noah as a confused child rather than simply as a mechanism for delivering supernatural clues. Jupe’s performance helps preserve that distinction.
The supporting cast—including Judith Light, Rosie Perez, Maria Dizzia, and Ava Lalezarzadeh—adds credibility and texture. However, several supporting characters primarily exist to provide information, express concern, or react to the latest development. They help the show feel populated, but they do not always deepen the central conflict. The story expands sideways more often than it develops Eli and Noah’s emotional situation.
The atmosphere is better than the mystery
Before has a deliberately haunted tone. Its visions, bloodier horror imagery, and ominous locations create a persistent sense that ordinary reality is becoming unreliable. The best scenes use uncertainty well: a disturbing event can be read as a psychological episode, a supernatural intrusion, or a manifestation of grief.
This mood is not incidental. It is the series’ most consistent achievement. Before knows how to make a room feel unsafe and how to turn a child’s fear into something visually threatening without abandoning the sadness at the center of Eli’s story. For viewers who value dread, subdued performances, and an atmosphere of emotional dislocation, there is material here to appreciate.
But atmosphere cannot indefinitely replace narrative movement. The show frequently creates the feeling that an explanation is just around the corner, then supplies another ominous fragment instead. A slow-burn mystery should use delay to make each new piece of information alter the audience’s understanding. Here, the clues often accumulate without changing the shape of the puzzle very much.

The season mistakes withholding for development
The main pacing problem is not simply that Before is slow. Deliberately paced mysteries can be absorbing when the delay produces richer character work, more complicated evidence, or a meaningful reinterpretation of earlier events. In this series, the delay too often feels like postponement for its own sake.
Episodes repeatedly signal that a major revelation is imminent. Yet many of the scenes between those signals repeat the same basic pattern: Noah behaves strangely, Eli finds another connection, adults debate what it means, and the show withholds the information that would allow the audience to judge the possibilities. Instead of suspense steadily tightening, impatience begins to replace curiosity.

This is what might be called mystery inflation. The series keeps enlarging the apparent importance of its unanswered questions, but the intervening storytelling does not always provide a proportionate increase in insight. The more the show insists that its explanation will be enormous, the more noticeable it becomes when individual episodes have not moved the characters or investigation far enough.
The format may be partly responsible. The premise could plausibly have supported a feature film or a shorter limited series, where the clues and emotional turns had less room to repeat themselves. At 10 episodes, the show needs more than additional signs that something is wrong. It needs reversals, consequences, and supporting characters whose choices complicate the case. Too often, it offers another ominous indication instead.
Grief and trauma are present, but not fully developed
Thematically, Before is reaching for more than a paranormal puzzle. It connects grief, childhood trauma, memory, and the possibility that emotional pain can persist across people, identities, and time. Eli’s profession makes that theme especially relevant: he is trained to interpret suffering, yet his own bereavement makes him susceptible to seeing personal meaning in Noah’s experiences.

There is a rich idea in that tension. The show asks whether explanation is always the same thing as healing, and whether a clinical account can accommodate experiences that feel spiritually or emotionally real. Those questions give the series a stronger foundation than its jump-scare mechanics.

The language of trauma can become repetitive, and the supernatural concepts do not always acquire enough emotional or philosophical depth to justify the weight placed on them. Before clearly wants to argue that damage can echo through lives and generations, but the symbolism is more ambitious than the character development supporting it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the ending work?
Spoiler-light answer: not well enough.
The finale attempts to explain the relationship between Eli, Noah, and the supernatural events surrounding them. The problem is not that the series leaves every detail ambiguous. Ambiguity can be a satisfying ending when the unanswered elements point toward a deeper question or make earlier scenes resonate differently.
Instead, the final revelations feel smaller and less fully integrated than the buildup requires. The series spends much of its season suggesting that the mystery reaches far beyond the immediate case. By the time it arrives at its explanation, the payoff feels rushed and underpowered. Some character dynamics receive less resolution than they need, while earlier developments do not always seem to have been incorporated into a coherent final design.
That imbalance explains the show’s central disappointment. Before does not fail because its supernatural answer is insufficiently literal. It fails because the story repeatedly uses the scale of the unknown to maintain suspense, then does not provide a comparably substantial final insight. The destination is not merely unexpected; it feels disproportionate to the journey.

You do not need an Apple device or an Apple TV 4K to watch it. The Apple TV app is available on supported televisions, streaming platforms, mobile devices, computers, and other compatible hardware. For viewers who specifically want dedicated hardware for Apple TV+ content, Apple TV 4K supports 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos when the television, receiver, and content setup also support those formats. It is an optional viewing upgrade, not a requirement for this series.
Final verdict
Before is a handsome, often eerie supernatural thriller with a genuinely committed Billy Crystal performance and a central relationship that can generate real tension. Its depiction of grief gives the premise emotional weight, while its haunted visual style supplies several effective moments of dread.
Unfortunately, the mystery keeps promising a larger and more meaningful destination than the series can provide. Repeated clues, delayed answers, thin supporting-character development, and a rushed payoff gradually weaken the suspense. Viewers who prioritize mood, performances, and supernatural ambiguity may find enough to enjoy. Those looking for a tightly constructed mystery with a carefully earned finale are likely to feel that Before does not go big enough—or deep enough—to justify its buildup.
Our rating: 2.5 out of 5.
