Written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, the 2025 film retells the fairy tale from stepsister Elvira’s perspective, as she competes with Agnes for a prince’s affection in a kingdom that prizes beauty. Bodily transformation is not a decorative shock: it is part of the story’s central conflict.
What is The Ugly Stepsister about?
Instead of following Cinderella, the film centers on Elvira, one of her stepsisters. Elvira competes with Agnes to win the prince’s affection and become the belle of the ball. The contest takes place in a kingdom where beauty shapes status and romantic prospects.

Official materials describe the premise in deliberately sharp terms. Paradise City Sales calls it a “twisted take” on Cinderella, where beauty is “a brutal business”; the Berlinale press kit calls it “a sinister twist” on the classic story. Those phrases are promotional framing, but they capture the film’s reversal: the familiar fairy-tale competition is seen from the perspective of someone trying to meet its beauty ideal.
How does it change the Cinderella story?
The change is more than swapping the protagonist. With Elvira at the center, the question shifts from whether Cinderella will escape hardship to what it costs to compete for acceptance in a world that rewards a narrow idea of beauty. Agnes is the rival in that contest, while the prince and the ball remain familiar points of the Cinderella story.

#1 Best Overall
N8 Films describes the film as a raw Cinderella twist told from the stepsister’s point of view. The result reframes a well-known fairy tale’s social hierarchy: the stepsister is no longer simply an obstacle in Cinderella’s story, but the character through whom the film examines beauty, competition, and bodily change.
Is The Ugly Stepsister a body-horror movie?
Yes. Its horror framing makes bodily transformation central to the narrative, rather than treating it as incidental spectacle. The Sundance Film Festival places the film in a wider conversation about women filmmakers, gender, bodily transformation, and physical horror. That context supports reading the transformation as a thematic device as well as a source of horror.
Rank #2
The film’s approach makes the fairy tale’s beauty pressure physical. The body becomes the terrain on which Elvira’s struggle is played out, turning the pursuit of an ideal into a horror premise. That is an interpretation of the story’s framing, not evidence that the film measures how beauty standards affect audiences or society.

ESC Films’ French distributor listing describes the film as a horror-drama made across Norway, Sweden, Poland, and Denmark. That page gives a runtime of 109 minutes, a July 2, 2025 release date, and a French under-16 classification. These are details for that listing and territory; they do not establish a universal rating, release date, or current streaming availability.
