The latest located official records place him there; they do not establish a later transfer.
Where is Thabo Bester being held?
DCS announced on 30 January 2026 that Bester had been transferred to eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Facility. The department said the move followed security-risk assessments. A Gauteng High Court judgment dated 30 March 2026 also records him at eBongweni, independently confirming the location at that time.
DCS said the transfer would not interrupt his access to legal representation, family communication or court processes. That is the department’s assurance about its arrangements, not independent confirmation of individual conditions. Read the DCS transfer statement.
Is he in prison for his existing sentences or awaiting trial?
The March 2026 judgment describes Bester as a sentenced prisoner serving existing life and other sentences. It also records a separate criminal case connected to his escape as pending in the Free State High Court.

Bester had asked the Gauteng High Court to treat him as a remand detainee while that separate case proceeded. On 30 March 2026, the court dismissed the request, addressing his classification and existing committal warrants. The ruling was not a verdict on the pending Free State charges. Read the judgment.
Has the Free State trial started?
The available records do not confirm that evidence began or that the case reached an outcome. The March judgment referred to a July 2026 setting; a Daily Sun report on 28 August 2026 described the matter as moving closer to trial after a virtual High Court appearance. That report does not establish whether the schedule changed, whether evidence began or whether the case has since been decided.

Accordingly, the latest located material describes the separate case as pending, but its post-August 2026 status is unconfirmed. The August report is available from Daily Sun / SNL24.

The documentary is background to the public interest in Bester, not evidence of where he is now. His current location is established by the later DCS statement and court judgment, while the status of the separate criminal case remains a distinct question. The 2025 documentary’s airing was not blocked after Bester and Nandipha Magudumana sought to stop it, according to SABC News.
