Beanie Feldstein wore her own black Kay Unger high-school prom dress to the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 21, 2018. She connected the choice to Lady Bird: her character Julie’s story ends at prom, and Feldstein wanted to honor that character at an awards show where she was a nominee with the cast.
What dress did Beanie Feldstein wear?
Contemporaneous reports identify the gown as a black Kay Unger dress—and say it was the dress Feldstein had worn to her own high-school prom. Glamour and Teen Vogue reported both details on January 21, 2018, as did Entertainment Tonight that day and ABC7 San Francisco the following day. Why did she wear her prom dress?
Feldstein linked the gown to her role as Julie in Lady Bird, whose story ends at prom. Glamour and Teen Vogue reported remarks she gave The Cut, including: “It’s just a gorgeous dress, and I love how my character’s story ends at the prom.” She also described trying it on again: “I put it on and it fit, surprisingly maybe better than it did in high school.” The choice let her honor Julie while attending the SAG Awards as a nominee with the cast.
Is the exact dress available to buy?
The contemporaneous reports identify Kay Unger as the designer but do not give a specific model, collection, or season. They also do not establish that the original gown is currently available. “Black V-neck formal gown” may work as a search for a similar look, but a lookalike should not be mistaken for Feldstein’s dress. Fashionista’s 2018 red-carpet gallery also captioned her outfit as Kay Unger: Fashionista.
