What “Battle the Day With Raktajino” is
Make: Magazine presents the drink as “Rakatajino, aka Klingon coffee,” and describes it as a spicy Qo’noS-inspired recipe. That is the project’s framing, not evidence of a single canonical Star Trek recipe. The project is credited to Sam Freeman, identified as an Online Editor at Make. Its page displays September 8 and September 18, 2025, without specifying which is the original publication date and which is an update. Make: Magazine’s project page labels the difficulty “Easy,” estimates 10 minutes, and gives a $0–$50 price estimate; the cost is Make’s estimate, not an independently checked price.
Ingredients and equipment
Make lists the following ingredients and tools:
- 1 liter water
- Coffee beans, brewed as a dark roast; the page does not specify a coffee-to-water ratio
- 8 whole cloves
- 4 star anise
- 1 teaspoon peppercorns
- A dash of ground nutmeg
- A coffee-making device and a small pot
No particular brewer or model is required by the listed instructions.
How to make it
- Simmer the spices: Put the water, cloves, star anise, peppercorns and nutmeg in a small pot. Bring to a boil and boil for at least five minutes.
- Brew the coffee: Brew a dark roast using your coffee-making device, leaving the spices in the water during brewing. The project does not prescribe a brewer or a coffee measurement, so follow the brewing directions for your chosen device and coffee.
- Serve: Pour hot into a wide mug. Add cream and sugar if you like.
What the source does—and doesn’t—claim
Make’s page copy says, “When Earth coffee isn’t enough to wake you up, try this spicy Qo’noS-inspired recipe.” It is a playful description, not a measured claim about caffeine or a guarantee that the drink will be more energizing than other coffee. The published recipe’s practical distinction is its spiced water and dark-roast coffee; it does not report tested variations or compare brewing devices.
