A film about the 1629 Batavia mutiny was reported to be in screenplay development in 2017, with Russell Crowe’s Fear of God Films said to have renewed the rights. That report named screenwriter Andrew Anastasios, but it does not establish that the film was greenlit, completed, or released. Its current status remains unverified.
What did the 2017 report say?
On 13 August 2017, PerthNow reported that Fear of God Films, the production company associated with Russell Crowe, had begun screenplay work on a proposed film about the Batavia mutiny. According to the report, author Hugh Edwards said the film rights had been renewed that month.
PerthNow named Andrew Anastasios as the screenwriter and noted his work on Crowe’s The Water Diviner. The report described the project as an adaptation of Edwards’s book Islands of Angry Ghosts.
Was the Batavia film made?
The 2017 article documents a development report, not a production greenlight or a finished film. It provides no release date, cast announcement, or confirmation that filming began. The available evidence does not establish what happened to the project after that report, so it is not possible to confirm that a Batavia film is currently in production or has been released.

What was the proposed film based on?
The reported source was Hugh Edwards’s Islands of Angry Ghosts. The PerthNow article calls it a 1963 bestseller, while a separate reference gives a different publication year. Because the references conflict and may relate to different editions, a publication year should not be treated as settled without checking the edition in question.
What did the report say about the mutiny?
PerthNow placed the mutiny on 4 June 1629 and reported that the Dutch East India vessel Batavia was wrecked at the Abrolhos Islands. Those details are the newspaper’s account; they have not been independently corroborated here with primary historical sources.

The article also said that eleven skeletons had been uncovered since the 1960s. It did not identify the archaeological authority behind that figure, so it should be understood as a number reported by PerthNow in 2017, not as a current independently verified count.

As quoted by PerthNow, Edwards told Freo Streetwise magazine: “They have a screenwriter working on it, but I’m not supposed to say anything about that.” The comment was reported in 2017 and describes the project at that time; it is not a present-day update.
