Barzakh is a supernatural family drama with an arresting visual world and an unusual ghostly romance. Its imagery and select performances may reward viewers drawn to ambiguity, but the series’ repetitive, abstract storytelling and extended pacing demand patience.
What is Barzakh about?
Directed by Asim Abbasi, the series follows 76-year-old Jafar Khanzada, who has outlived two wives and is preparing to marry again. The person he says he truly loved was his first wife, now dead; she returns as a ghost. The impending marriage draws Jafar’s estranged family into a story shaped by folklore, grief, love and loss.
The remote mountain setting is described in the review as “Land of Nowhere,” with imagery associated with Hunza Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan. That landscape gives the family drama a fable-like, supernatural frame rather than grounding it in everyday realism.
What works: atmosphere and performances
Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review calls Barzakh “ambitious, flourish-filled and always visually striking.” The striking imagery and the scale of the premise are its clearest attractions: the show brings family conflict and old grief into a world that feels remote, heightened and touched by the supernatural.

The review is especially taken with the quieter character moments. Sanam Saeed’s Scheherazade receives praise for a subtly developed performance, while Fawad M Khan’s Shehryar storyline is singled out as one of the more compelling strands. These quieter scenes provide a human counterweight to the show’s cosmic language and ornate setting.
Where the series may lose viewers
The same review argues that the plot is needlessly tortuous and repetitive, and that following it requires “tremendous patience.” The series’ obliqueness can make its emotional ideas harder to grasp, while extended pacing may leave viewers feeling that the story is circling rather than advancing.

Ramnath also criticizes the dialogue and staging in the early episodes. Salman Shahid’s Jafar is intentionally abrasive, but the character’s mannerisms may frustrate viewers rather than draw them closer. The show’s interest in cosmic ideas and inherited pain sometimes comes at the expense of narrative clarity.
Cast and creative context
The principal cast includes Salman Shahid as Jafar, Sanam Saeed as Scheherazade, Fawad A Khan as Saifullah and Fawad M Khan as Shehryar. Fawad A Khan and Fawad M Khan are separate performers with different roles.

The review reads the series through themes of self-healing and inherited trauma. Those are interpretive lenses, not a definitive statement of Abbasi’s intent. A High on Films interview with Abbasi offers further creative context.
