He said an MRI identified it after weeks of bronchitis and a relapse, and that doctors did not believe it had spread. He planned to have it removed surgically; later updates reported the operation was successful and described a complicated recovery.
What Manilow announced on December 22, 2025
Manilow’s official website said his medical team had found a stage-one cancerous tumor on his left lung and was optimistic because it had been detected early. He described the discovery as unexpected after an illness: he had experienced six weeks of bronchitis followed by a five-week relapse, and an MRI ordered after that illness revealed the spot. The Associated Press and CBS reported that Manilow said doctors did not believe the cancer had spread at the time.

“It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early,” Manilow said in his December 22 statement.
Was the diagnosis a shock?
In his account, the cancer was discovered while doctors were investigating his prolonged respiratory illness, rather than after he sought care for a known lung tumor. He said the MRI showed the cancerous spot. The announcement did not provide further clinical details about the scan or the tumor.

What treatment did he expect?
At the time of the announcement, Manilow said he planned surgery to remove the tumor. He also said doctors did not expect him to need chemotherapy or radiation. That was his reported understanding then, not a general rule about lung cancer treatment.
The announcement led him to postpone January 2026 performances so he could have surgery and recover. Although the initial plan referred to a February return, the schedule changed: on February 4, his official site said doctors had advised rescheduling February residency shows while he recovered.

What later updates said about surgery and recovery
Surgery and complications
In a June 2026 interview with ABC News, Manilow said surgery successfully removed the stage-one tumor and that, according to his doctors, he did not need chemotherapy or radiation. He also said pneumonia led to an intensive-care-unit stay. In a May interview with the Los Angeles Times, he described pneumonia and a seven-day ICU stay.
His voice and return to performing
Manilow said recovery took longer than he had expected and that he was working to regain the strength to perform. In the ABC News interview aired June 1, 2026, he spoke about uncertainty over his voice: “My voice — I don’t know whether it’s coming back,”
