Bank of Dave is a 2023 Netflix comedy inspired by the real-life efforts of Burnley businessman Dave Fishwick. It follows a local entrepreneur trying to establish a community bank, but the film is a dramatization—not proof that every character, conflict or event happened as shown.

What is Bank of Dave about?

Netflix describes the film this way: “After big financial institutions fail the people in his small town, a self-made car dealer decides to fight the odds and set up his own local bank.” The comedy stars Joel Fry, Phoebe Dynevor and Rory Kinnear, among others. Netflix’s film listing identifies it as a 2023 film.

The story centres on Dave Fishwick, a Burnley car dealer who set out to provide local lending. The Guardian’s release-era review described the plot as his effort to secure a licence for a bank, and reported that the film arrived on Netflix on 16 January 2023. That is historical release information, not a guarantee that the film is currently available in every country’s Netflix catalogue. The Guardian’s review supplies that context.

How closely does the film follow real events?

The real-life inspiration is Fishwick and his business, Burnley Savings and Loans Limited. The company says the films are inspired by Fishwick’s story, and Screen Yorkshire describes the production as based on his true-life experiences. Those descriptions establish the real-world basis, but they do not verify each scene, character or dramatic confrontation as literal history. The film should be understood as a dramatized account rather than a scene-by-scene record. The company’s site and Screen Yorkshire’s production page provide those framings.

#1 Best Overall

Screen Yorkshire reports that filming took place widely across Yorkshire, with additional scenes in Lancashire. The locations connect the production to the region associated with Fishwick’s story, but do not by themselves establish that the events depicted happened there exactly as shown.

What happened with the real Burnley firm?

Burnley Savings and Loans Limited is the real firm associated with Fishwick. ITV News reported in January 2023 that the business opened in 2011. In that interview, Fishwick was reported as saying it had lent around £30 million to thousands of people and businesses. That is a dated figure attributed to Fishwick in an ITV report—not a current audited total. Read ITV News’ January 2023 report.

The film’s use of “bank” should not be taken as a complete description of the firm’s present legal status or services. The FCA Register lists Burnley Savings and Loans Limited as authorised since 9 August 2017, under firm reference number 717019, for specific activities and product types. Its register entry directs consumers to check the full record and warns that some activities may not be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). FCA authorisation alone does not establish that every product or activity is FSCS-protected. Check the FCA Register entry for the firm’s permissions and current details.
