Amazon announced the renewal on October 6, 2025, confirming that Maggie Q will return as Detective Renée Ballard. A separate report puts a California production tax credit at $14.84 million, but that figure has not been independently confirmed by a California Film Commission record in the sources cited here.
Season 2 is confirmed, not just more likely
Amazon MGM Studios announced the renewal on October 6, 2025. The announcement says Maggie Q will return as Renée Ballard and quotes Lauren Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series–Co-Productions for Amazon MGM Studios: “We are excited to share that the Bosch universe will continue to expand with a second season of Ballard for our global Prime Video customers.” Read Amazon’s renewal announcement.
That announcement establishes the renewal. It does not give a Season 2 premiere date or release window, so there is no confirmed timing to report.
What the tax-incentive report establishes—and what it does not
Screen Realm reported on October 7, 2025, that Ballard received a $14.84 million California Film Commission tax credit in August 2025. The amount and award details are secondary-source reporting; the sources cited here do not include a primary commission record verifying the figure or identifying which season the credit covers. See Screen Realm’s report.

A production incentive is relevant context, but it is not the basis for saying the series was renewed. Amazon’s separate official announcement confirms Season 2. The report does not establish the credit’s precise scope, nor should the amount be treated as proof of a renewal or as a measure of the season’s budget.
What Ballard is about
The series is part of the Bosch universe and follows LAPD Detective Renée Ballard as she leads the department’s Cold Case Unit. Maggie Q stars as Ballard. The show is based on Michael Connelly’s novels featuring the character. Amazon’s series guide lists appearances in Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star, and The Waiting.
