Vishal Furia’s 2021 Marathi-language film benefits from strong performances and brisk pacing; its central revelation is less satisfying than the journey toward it.
What is Bali about?
Set in a children’s hospital inside a colonial-era building, the film follows widowed father Shrikant (Swapnil Joshi) and his seven-year-old son Mandar (Samarth Jadhav). One wing of the hospital has been sealed off. Mandar begins having visions and befriends Bhaskar, a boy who says his mother, Elizabeth, lives in that closed section. Doctor Radhika (Pooja Sawant) suggests shared psychosis as one possible explanation, while Shrikant tries to understand what is happening and protect his son.
The premise keeps the source of Mandar’s experiences uncertain, so the story’s tension comes from watching the adults weigh supernatural and psychological explanations. Scroll lists the film’s runtime as 103 minutes. Scroll’s 2021 review describes the film as a horror story shaped around a child’s frightening experiences.
Do the scares work?
Often, yes—but not consistently enough for viewers who want a steady run of shocks. Scroll praises the jump scares, particularly the moments built around Mandar, as well as the film’s atmosphere and pacing. The child-centered point of view gives the unsettling hospital setting much of its force.

OTTplay’s review offers a more restrained assessment: it calls Bali more thriller than horror, finds it reliant on sound effects, and argues that it has too few jump scares. The two responses point to the film’s main trade-off. It can create unease and land individual shocks, but it builds mystery as much as fear.
How are the performances and mystery?
Scroll singles out Joshi, Jadhav and Sawant for praise. Their performances help anchor a story that could otherwise feel like a sequence of eerie encounters: Mandar’s fear is central, Shrikant’s skepticism gives the mystery a human point of entry, and Radhika provides a rational possibility without immediately settling the question.

The mystery helps maintain interest, and OTTplay credits the editing with sustaining that pull. The weakness is the payoff: Scroll finds the central revelation too pat and disappointing. The film’s buildup is more effective than the explanation it ultimately offers, so viewers who prize a surprising, fully satisfying resolution may be let down.
Who is Bali best for?
- Choose it if you enjoy atmospheric supernatural mysteries, child-centered scares and a relatively brisk story.
- Adjust expectations if you want frequent jump scares: the film’s tension and mystery carry as much weight as its horror.
- Be cautious if a powerful final reveal is essential to your enjoyment; the resolution is the film’s least persuasive element for Scroll.
OTTplay rated Bali 3/5 in its 2021 review; that is its own score, not an audience rating or aggregate. The critical split is less about whether the film has a supernatural mystery than about how strongly it delivers horror and whether its ending rewards the buildup.

Furia is also the director of Chhorii, as the Scroll review notes in its headline. In a 2025 interview with The Movie Mail, Furia said, “Horror can be a great tool to tell uncomfortable truths.” That is his broader view of the genre, not a specific explanation of Bali; here, the horror is primarily used to frame a father-and-son mystery.
