Can six estranged sisters overcome their past and face their struggles? Kedar Shinde’s 2023 Marathi comedy-drama Baipan Bhari Deva brings them together around a Mangalagaur competition, using that reunion to explore women’s lives, relationships and unresolved conflicts. Apple TV classifies the film as comedy and drama. The International Film Festival of Delhi’s 2026 catalogue also lists it as a family film. That combination points to a family-centred story with comic and dramatic elements, rather than a documentary account of Mangalagaur.
What does the review praise—and where does it see a weakness?
In his Times of India review, updated July 20, 2023, Kalpeshraj Kubal rated the film 3.5 out of 5. He found the sisters’ everyday concerns relatable and praised the ensemble for giving the different personalities their own presence.

Kubal singled out Vandana Gupte’s touching performance, Rohini Hattangadi’s screen presence and Sukanya Kulkarni-Mone’s energy. He also noted the contrast between Suchitra Bandekar and Shilpa Navalkar, and said Deepa Parab makes an impression despite having less screen time. His reservation was pacing: some scenes feel stretched, though the performances help carry them.
That balance is useful to keep in mind: the review’s strongest case for the film is its ensemble and recognisable family concerns, not consistently brisk storytelling. Kubal’s 3.5/5 is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus rating.

Who made the film?
Kedar Shinde directed Baipan Bhari Deva, and Vaishali Naik wrote it, according to the International Film Festival of Delhi’s 2026 catalogue. The catalogue lists Rohini Hattangadi, Vandana Gupte, Sukanya Kulkarni-Mone, Shilpa Navalkar, Suchitra Bandekar and Deepa Parab as the lead ensemble.
In a July 19, 2023 Bollywood Hungama interview, Shinde said the film had been shot in 2020 and taken time to reach release. Recalling the financing delay, he said, “For around nine months, I didn’t get a producer for this film.” He also said the six roles were tailored to the actresses he had in mind; these are the director’s recollections of the production.

What does Mangalagaur add to the story?
The competition is the premise’s gathering point: it gives the estranged sisters a reason to come together and creates space for their individual concerns to surface. The film’s cultural frame may be especially resonant for viewers familiar with Mangalagaur. For viewers who are not, the key question is whether the sisters’ conflicts and relationships remain clear even when the tradition itself is unfamiliar.
How did the film perform in theatres?
Ormax Media’s June 29, 2024 analysis reported ₹92 crore in gross domestic collections for Baipan Bhari Deva and ₹1 crore net on its opening day. Those are different measures: the first is a reported domestic gross total, while the second is the net opening-day figure. Ormax described the film among Marathi cinema’s top two grossers, with the rank depending on gross-versus-net comparisons and the pre-GST context of Sairat; it should not be read as a timeless, uncontested ranking.

Ormax also cited its Sizing The Cinema Report 2024 for a comparison of theatre audiences: 55% male and 45% female for Marathi films, against 63% male and 37% female for Hindi films. These figures describe that report’s 2024 comparison, not all moviegoers or a current population-wide measure.
