Bailey Anne Kennedy won Miss Maryland USA on June 1, 2024, becoming the first transgender woman—and the first Asian American—to win that state title, according to CBS Baltimore. She was 31 and competing in her first pageant. The achievement was a milestone in Maryland pageant history, not a claim about every pageant or national competition.
Who is Bailey Anne Kennedy?
Kennedy was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland. CBS Baltimore reported that her June 2024 win came in her first pageant. In a Washingtonian profile, Kennedy described the ordinariness she wanted people to see alongside her public identity: “I’m just like your sister, your cousin, even your mom. I just happened to go from point A to point B.” Washingtonian’s profile offers more of her perspective on the competition and her life.
What made her Miss Maryland USA win historic?
Contemporary reporting described Kennedy as the first transgender woman and first Asian American to win the Miss Maryland USA title. Those firsts refer specifically to the Maryland state crown. They should not be broadened into claims about all pageants, Miss USA, or other national competitions.
CBS Baltimore also reported that transgender women had been able to compete in the pageants since 2013 and that the pageant’s former maximum age of 28 was removed in 2024. These are details from that report, rather than a complete independent history of pageant policy. What happened after she won?
Kennedy was scheduled to represent Maryland at Miss USA 2024 in Los Angeles on August 4, 2024, ABC News reported. That competition has since taken place, so the date is a past event—not an upcoming appearance. ABC News covered her path to Miss USA.

The organization’s eligibility page also lists current conditions, including being a medically recognized female and meeting a Maryland residency, full-time college student, or full-time employment requirement. Its posted age divisions are organized by birth year. These are the rules currently displayed on the site; they should not be assumed to be a definitive record of the rules in effect at the 2024 competition.

A 2024 profile published by People and carried by Yahoo described Kennedy as married to a U.S. Marine Corps member and as an advocate for military spouses through her work with the USO. That is a description of her in that profile at the time, not confirmation of a current role. The 2024 interview provides that biographical context.
