Bad Sisters season 2 brings back the Garvey sisters for another darkly comic mystery, but its success depends on whether you want more time with this ensemble or think the first season had already reached the right ending. The performances and comedy remain a draw; the continuation’s necessity and pacing are more debatable. Critics split on whether the new emotional turns justify reopening the story.
What is Bad Sisters season 2 about?
The second season picks up two years after the death of Grace’s abusive husband. Renewed suspicion and old secrets put the Garvey family under pressure again, sending the sisters into another mystery without simply replaying the first season’s events. Apple’s announcement describes the series as a mix of dark comedy and thriller; that is the show’s own positioning, while critics differ over how well the new plot earns its place.
Do the Garvey sisters still carry the show?
They do. Eva (Sharon Horgan), Grace (Anne-Marie Duff), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka (Eve Hewson) remain the series’ center of gravity. In his TVLine review, Dave Nemetz praises the returning cast’s chemistry and the comedy, even as he questions the story’s extension. Audrey Fournier’s Le Monde review is more taken with the emotional surprises and performances, particularly Horgan and Hewson.
Fiona Shaw changes the ensemble’s energy
Fiona Shaw joins as Angelica, a character Nemetz identifies as a source of chaotic energy. Fournier sees Shaw’s addition as opening up new possibilities for the ensemble rather than merely repeating season 1’s dynamics. Apple also lists Owen McDonnell, Thaddea Graham, Barry Ward and Peter Claffey among the season’s cast additions. Shaw is the most clearly singled out in the reviews, and her presence gives the returning sisters a new force to play against.

Is season 2 as good as season 1?
That depends on what made the first season work for you. If the sisters’ performances, their dark humor and the show’s collisions of comic and dramatic moments mattered most, season 2 offers more of those pleasures, with new characters and emotional turns. If the appeal was a mystery that moved toward a satisfying resolution, the follow-up may feel less necessary.
Nemetz’s central objection is that the story has been extended beyond its natural limits; he views the new investigation as a retread. Fournier is more appreciative of the season’s surprises, humor and changed ensemble, while also finding some of its judgments about men and Catholicism stark or familiar. These are distinct critical responses, not a settled consensus that the second season is either a clear improvement or a failure.
How well does the new mystery work?
The season’s main risk is that renewing suspicion after a story with a satisfying endpoint can make the mystery feel like an excuse to keep the characters in trouble. Nemetz finds the investigation repetitive and its extension implausible. Fournier’s more favorable response suggests that the new emotional jolts and character interactions can still make the continuation worthwhile, even if the underlying approach feels familiar to some viewers.
Rotten Tomatoes’ season page and episode guide also display a range of reactions, including complaints about slow pacing or reliance on twists and praise for the ensemble and new direction. Without a clearly established season score or review count here, individual reviews give a more useful sense of the disagreement than a single aggregate figure would.

Who should watch Bad Sisters season 2?
- Watch it if you want to spend more time with the Garvey sisters, enjoy the dark-comedy-and-thriller blend, and are open to a new mystery that expands the story after season 1.
- Temper expectations if you need every continuation to feel essential, or you most valued season 1’s tighter, more self-contained arc. The central criticism is not that the cast has lost its appeal, but that the story may be stretching a premise that already had a strong resolution.
