Coverage of the release positioned the album as a tribute to Puerto Rico. EFE also described it as addressing problems facing the island, while Apple Music presents the album in relation to Puerto Rico and its musical legacy.
Producer MAG explained the musical concept in a TIME interview published January 5, 2025: “He wanted to create an album that takes you on a journey through the genres that make up Puerto Rican music.” That is MAG’s description of Bad Bunny’s idea, not a direct quotation from the artist.

“NUEVAYoL” and its salsa reference
TIME identifies a specific link to Puerto Rican salsa: “NUEVAYoL” is built around a sample from El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’s classic “Un Verano en Nueva York.” It offers a concrete example of the album’s engagement with earlier music rather than just a broad cultural theme.
