Viewers criticized The Bachelorette for replaying Jenn Tran’s proposal to Devin Strader during the Season 21 finale’s After the Final Rose segment, with Tran seated beside him after their breakup. Tran later said she knew the proposal would be shown and wanted Strader to watch it too—though that does not establish what choices she had during the live segment.
What viewers saw in the Season 21 finale
Tran chose Strader and proposed to him in Hawaii during the finale, which aired September 3, 2024. The pair became engaged. Later, during After the Final Rose, they discussed their breakup and then watched the proposal replay while seated together. Tran appeared emotional as the footage played. That sequence prompted viewers to question why the show played the proposal with Tran and Strader together. One post quoted in coverage asked, “WHY is the show making Jenn watch this proposal WHILE SITTING NEXT TO DEVIN[?]” Another called the choice “cruel.” These are examples of individual reactions, not a survey of the audience. Her Campus and Yahoo Entertainment’s coverage of TODAY.com reporting collected such responses.
What Jenn Tran said about watching the proposal
After the broadcast, Tran told Us Weekly, as reported by Life & Style, that she knew the proposal would be shown and wanted Strader to watch it as well. Cosmopolitan also reported her saying, “There were no surprises,” and that she wanted him to see the replay. Her explanation adds important context to the impression that she was simply forced to watch it: it does not reveal what options she had during the live segment. Life & Style and Cosmopolitan reported her comments.

During the finale, Tran described the proposal as something she did not regret, while distinguishing the man she proposed to then from the person she believed Strader to be afterward. TVLine transcribed her saying: “I do not regret proposing to that man on there. But that man doesn’t exist anymore.” That was Tran’s perspective in the breakup conversation, not independent evidence about Strader’s motives or character.
