Halina Reijn’s erotic thriller is strongest when Kidman and Harris Dickinson’s charged performances expose how power and vulnerability can shift between two people. Its central relationship holds attention more firmly than some of the film’s broader themes.
What is Babygirl about?
Written and directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl follows a high-powered CEO who risks her career and family when she begins an affair with a much younger intern. That premise makes the relationship’s stakes personal and professional from the outset, without requiring the story to be reduced to a simple contest over who holds control.
The film is a U.S. production presented in English and competed at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Its runtime is 114 minutes, according to the Venice Biennale film entry. A24 lists Kidman, Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas among the cast.
Nicole Kidman anchors the shifting power dynamic
Kidman gives Romy’s composure and vulnerability room to coexist. She does not make desire a tidy declaration of liberation or a symptom with one obvious explanation; instead, the performance lets the character’s self-command rub against impulses she cannot neatly contain. Dickinson meets that intensity with a directness that keeps the relationship from feeling like a one-sided exercise in control.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The attraction is compelling in part because the film keeps its power balance unsettled. Age, workplace hierarchy, secrecy, and personal agency complicate the intimacy rather than disappearing once the affair begins. The central performances make those tensions legible without resolving them into a single moral lesson.
Is Babygirl an erotic thriller?
Yes. The film combines sexually charged drama with the unease of a workplace relationship carrying consequences beyond the couple. It also has a darkly comic edge. The office setting gives the story a second register: the affair is intimate, but Romy’s position as CEO means that professional authority and personal desire cannot be cleanly separated.

Reijn has described her interest in taboo desire, shame, vulnerability, gender, age, hierarchy, and instinct. In her official Venice Biennale director statement, she writes, “I am fascinated by the duality of human nature, and this film is an attempt to shine a light, without judgement, on the opposing forces that make up our personalities.” That is an account of the director’s intention, not a guarantee that every theme lands equally well.
Kidman, speaking at the Venice press conference, described the film as being about “sex, desire, your inner thoughts,” as well as “secrets, marriage, truth, power, consent,” in remarks reported by The Guardian. She also called it “one woman’s story” told “through her gaze.” Reijn’s stated interest in the “female gaze” helps explain the film’s point of view, though viewers may differ on how successfully that perspective handles the relationship’s workplace imbalance and consequences.

Where the film’s ideas lose focus
The intimate power shifts are more fully realized than every theme the film introduces. AP critic Jake Coyle, in his Associated Press review, praises the lead performances and describes the gender and power dynamics as continually shifting, while finding some threads underdeveloped. He specifically notes that the automation thread is not fully unraveled and judges the film less daring than it seems to believe itself to be.
That critique points to the main limitation: the relationship has a clear emotional charge, while some of the surrounding ideas feel less integrated. The film is most persuasive when it stays close to the characters’ competing needs and least cohesive when it asks those dynamics to carry every theme at once. Coyle rated it three out of four stars; that is his assessment, not a consensus score.

Is Babygirl worth watching?
For viewers drawn to adult dramas built around performance, desire, and unstable power, Babygirl is worth considering. Kidman’s command of Romy and the intensity of her scenes with Dickinson give the film a strong center, even when its wider thematic strands do not all connect with equal force. AP reports an R rating for strong sexual content, nudity, and language, which may matter to viewers deciding whether its explicit material suits them.
