AWS Elemental MediaStore is no longer available. For a simple live-video origin, AWS recommends Amazon S3; for workflows needing DRM, ad insertion, cross-region failover, or specific low-latency requirements, use AWS Elemental MediaPackage. The right replacement depends on what MediaStore did in your architecture—not just where you stored files.
MediaStore’s shutdown date has passed
AWS’s General Reference lists November 12, 2025 as MediaStore’s end-of-support date. AWS’s discontinuation announcement says customers could continue using the service until November 13, 2025, after which its capabilities would no longer be available. The dates reflect different wording in the two AWS sources: the reference table’s end-of-support date and the announcement’s last day of normal use/service availability. Choose S3 or MediaPackage by workflow
AWS does not identify one universal, one-for-one replacement. Its direction is conditional: use S3 for a simple live-video origin, and MediaPackage for advanced requirements that need packaging or specific resiliency and latency capabilities. As AWS’s Dan Gehred put it in the November 12, 2024 announcement: “If you have a simple live video streaming workflow, you can migrate to Amazon S3. For advanced workflows that require cross-region failover or specific low-latency requirements, you will need to migrate to AWS Elemental MediaPackage.”

AWS’s MediaLive guidance describes MediaStore as the simpler choice when repackaging is unnecessary. That is useful as a description of the former workflow distinction, not a current recommendation to use MediaStore. Origin storage is not the same as just-in-time packaging
S3 is object storage that can serve as an origin for a simple live-video workflow. MediaPackage is a media service for workflows that need packaging and related capabilities. Replacing MediaStore with S3 may be appropriate when the job was mainly to provide a simple origin; it does not, by itself, meet requirements for DRM or ad insertion that depend on repackaging. Conversely, choosing MediaPackage should be driven by a real workflow requirement rather than assuming every former MediaStore deployment needs an advanced service.
Cost and performance claims need workload context
AWS describes S3 as a lower-cost option for live-video origination than MediaStore, but its announcement gives no prices, workload assumptions, or quantified savings. AWS also cites S3’s strong read-after-write consistency, implemented in 2020, and improved tail-latency performance as context for using S3 in this role. These are AWS’s statements, not an independent head-to-head benchmark or a guarantee for a particular workload. Plan the move around the data you need to keep
Separate persistent objects from temporary live-origin objects before planning a copy. AWS notes that live-origin data is often not persistent: an encoder may delete objects after a configured period, or a lifecycle policy may remove them. Persistent assets—such as objects retained for later use—need a separate retention and destination decision.
If you still have access to the data
AWS’s announcement described using MediaStore’s List and Get APIs to identify and retrieve data, then copy persistent objects to a storage target such as S3. Because the shutdown date has passed, that announcement does not establish that those APIs remain accessible now.

- Inventory the objects and determine which are persistent business records or assets rather than disposable live-origin output.
- Identify the destination and retention policy for each persistent data set; S3 is one example named by AWS.
- If the MediaStore data remains accessible in your account, use the available List and Get API access to enumerate and retrieve objects, then validate the copied data at the destination.
- Check downstream workflows, permissions, and lifecycle rules against the new location before retiring any remaining references.
If the data is no longer retrievable
AWS advised customers who could not retrieve data before the deadline, or had other questions, to contact AWS Support through their AWS account. The notice does not promise that post-shutdown retrieval will be possible, so treat support as the next step—not as a guaranteed recovery path. AWS discontinuation announcement.
Do not assume a MediaPackage v1-to-v2 migration is automatic
If MediaPackage is the destination, first establish whether your target is version 1 or version 2 and plan resource migration separately from the MediaStore shutdown. AWS says MediaPackage v2 uses distinct resource identifiers and has no automated process for migrating v1 resources to v2. This is a MediaPackage version-migration limitation; it does not describe an automated conversion from MediaStore. AWS Elemental MediaPackage User Guide.

A complex migration example is not a universal blueprint
AWS’s June 29, 2026 case study describes broadcaster 5 moving from a dual-pipeline arrangement to MediaPackage v2, including workflow needs such as DVB-DASH and accessibility signaling. It illustrates that a complex broadcast migration can involve requirements beyond object storage, but it is a customer-specific example—not a default recipe for every MediaStore user. Your player, output formats, failover design, and packaging requirements should determine the architecture. AWS case study.
