AWS Elemental MediaPackage vs OBS for Streaming Prerecorded Videos to YouTube

OBS is the more direct option for playing a prerecorded file into a YouTube Live broadcast. MediaPackage is for packaging an incoming live stream, typically alongside an upstream AWS encoder.

For a straightforward YouTube Live broadcast of a prerecorded video, OBS is the more direct place to start. OBS can play a video file in a scene and send the resulting stream to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not a desktop video player or a standalone encoder: it packages and originates a live stream supplied by an upstream service, commonly AWS Elemental MediaLive in AWS’s documented architecture. Consider the AWS route when you need its managed cloud pipeline and packaged outputs—not just to get one file onto YouTube Live.

First, distinguish a live broadcast from an upload

A prerecorded video can be sent to YouTube as a live broadcast: viewers see it through a live event, rather than as an ordinary uploaded video or a scheduled Premiere. That requires a source to play the file and produce a live stream, plus YouTube’s current ingest details and event setup.

MediaPackage’s live workflow is different from its video-on-demand workflow. For live delivery, a channel receives a stream from an upstream encoder; for VOD delivery, AWS documents source content stored in Amazon S3. MediaPackage is not documented as taking an arbitrary local MP4 and directly pushing it to YouTube. AWS describes MediaPackage live channels and endpoints, while its MediaPackage documentation covers separate live and VOD delivery paths.

What each product does in this comparison

OBS: play and send from a computer

OBS is desktop production and streaming software. Add the prerecorded file as a media source in a scene, check that it plays as intended, then configure the stream to match YouTube’s current ingest settings. OBS documentation covers media sources in scenes. The computer running OBS and its network connection must remain available while the broadcast is running.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

MediaPackage: package and originate an incoming stream

MediaPackage handles the packaging and origination stage; it is not the component that plays a local file or performs the upstream live encode. In AWS’s documented live flow, an encoder such as MediaLive sends a stream to MediaPackage, and a downstream player or content delivery network requests a packaged output. AWS lists HLS and CMAF over HTTPS as MediaPackage v2 live input types and describes HLS and DASH output formats in its supported inputs and outputs reference and live processing flow.

How the workflows compare

Need OBS-led route AWS MediaPackage route
Play a prerecorded file as a live scene OBS can add a media source to a scene; confirm playback behavior in the installed version. MediaPackage is not the file player. An upstream component must send it a live stream.
Encode the live source OBS produces and sends the stream from the desktop. The documented AWS architecture uses an upstream encoder such as MediaLive; MediaPackage packages and originates its output.
Send to YouTube Use the current YouTube Live event’s ingest details and configure OBS accordingly. AWS has documented MediaLive workflow options for social destinations including YouTube; verify current support and setup in AWS and YouTube documentation.
Package for other playback destinations Not MediaPackage’s role. MediaPackage can provide packaged outputs such as HLS and DASH for downstream players or CDNs.
Operational setup Fewer cloud components for a desktop-only broadcast, but the host and network must be available. More AWS services and configuration; check costs for the services and region you use.

Which one should you choose?

Choose OBS for a single-file YouTube Live broadcast

If the goal is simply to play an existing documentary or other prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event, OBS is the more direct workflow to evaluate first. It combines file playback in a scene with stream output, without requiring MediaPackage’s separate packaging role. This is a local workflow: the computer and connection running the broadcast are part of the setup.

Consider AWS when the pipeline solves a broader need

MediaPackage is worth considering when you need managed cloud origination and packaging for downstream playback formats, or the project already depends on AWS media services. In the documented live pattern, MediaLive handles upstream encoding and MediaPackage handles packaging/origination. AWS’s RTMPS example builds an OBS-to-load-balancer-to-MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow and warns that its resources incur charges while running and are not covered by Free Tier. Check current regional service pricing before building a pipeline. For one file and one YouTube destination, those additional services may add configuration and cost without addressing a need you have.

What to verify before going live

  • YouTube event and ingest settings: Check the event’s Live Control Room for the current server address, stream key, protocol, and recommended settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings page provides resolution and bitrate guidance; use the values applicable to your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming a setting from an older guide.
  • OBS version and playback: Add the file through the media-source controls documented for your installed version, then test the scene and confirm how playback behaves at the end of the file. Validate the stream output and YouTube preview before the event.
  • AWS service path: If using AWS, confirm that the current MediaLive workflow supports your intended input and YouTube output, and determine how the source reaches MediaLive. AWS’s older workflow-wizard article lists RTMP and MP4 input options and social-platform outputs including YouTube, but its example uses OBS as an RTMP live camera source; treat it as architectural context, not a current end-to-end recipe for broadcasting any MP4. See AWS’s workflow-wizard example.
  • Rights and YouTube rules: Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, soundtrack, and other material, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and policies. Being prerecorded does not exempt a broadcast from copyright or platform rules.
  • Cost and availability: For an AWS build, check the services, region, and hours that will incur charges. For OBS, plan for a computer and network that can sustain the broadcast for its full duration.
