For a prerecorded video loop sent directly to YouTube Live, a VPS is usually the more direct architecture: it hosts an encoder that sends the stream to YouTube. AWS Elemental MediaPackage is a managed packaging and origination service for a broader streaming workflow, not a required step for sending a loop to YouTube. The available official pricing information does not establish which option costs less for a particular channel. A fair estimate needs a defined stream profile, AWS region and configuration, and—on the VPS side—compute, bandwidth and transfer terms.
First decide what you are building
The cost comparison changes depending on whether you are only sending a prerecorded loop to YouTube or building an AWS workflow that packages and delivers video to viewers.
- Direct YouTube loop: a VPS runs or relays an encoder and provides sustained outbound connectivity to YouTube Live. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer formats. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Managed AWS delivery: MediaPackage performs just-in-time video packaging and origination in AWS. It fits into a broader delivery architecture; AWS’s live-streaming example includes encoding and CDN delivery as separate services. MediaPackage should not be treated as the cost of an entire AWS live workflow, and a VPS plan price alone does not establish the cost of a loop that must run continuously.
How MediaPackage charges work
AWS has separate pricing models for live and VOD use. For live channels, MediaPackage charges are based on the volume of content ingested and the volume originated and packaged, measured in GB. Consult AWS MediaPackage pricing and AWS’s MediaPackage billing documentation for the applicable rates and billing details.

AWS says content cached and served from a CDN does not incur MediaPackage’s streamed-out per-GB charge. A CDN such as CloudFront can reduce the volume originated and packaged by MediaPackage, but CDN delivery and other applicable data-transfer charges still matter to a complete bill. AWS also states in its billing documentation that there are no contracts or minimum commitments for using MediaPackage.
The AWS live-streaming deployment guide gives an illustrative one-hour live-event scenario for 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia), with separate costs for encoding, MediaPackage ingest and packaging/origination, and CloudFront distribution. That example shows why delivery architecture and audience matter; it is not a quote for a VPS-to-YouTube loop or a like-for-like price comparison.

What the VPS must provide
For a direct-to-YouTube loop, the VPS hosts the encoder and must sustain the stream’s outbound connection. Its required compute depends on what the encoder does: looping an already suitable prepared file, relaying a stream, or re-encoding at a different resolution are not equivalent workloads. The selected provider’s transfer allowance, sustained-throughput policy and overage charges also affect the cost.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists supported settings and recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream for viewers, so a creator sending directly to YouTube does not need to send a separate rendition ladder just to produce different viewer output formats. Inputs to gather before estimating
Collect these details before using a pricing calculator or comparing provider quotes:
- Target resolution, frame rate, input codec and bitrate.
- Hours streamed per month, and whether the input is an already prepared file.
- Whether the VPS will relay, loop or re-encode the source, plus the compute needed for that task.
- The AWS region and the number and bitrate of MediaPackage inputs and outputs.
- Whether AWS will serve viewers, expected viewer volume, and expected CDN/cache behavior.
- The VPS plan’s CPU, transfer allowance, sustained-throughput policy and overage price.
Without these inputs, a single monthly figure would conceal assumptions rather than answer which architecture costs less.

Operational checks for a continuous YouTube loop
Whichever encoder path you choose, use YouTube’s published encoder settings for the selected resolution and frame rate, and confirm the correct RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private. Before relying on a long-running broadcast, YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event; see its encoder guidance.
A continuous loop also needs a plan for process failure and stream interruptions. The official sources cited here recommend stream-health monitoring but do not establish a particular VPS restart method or reliability level. Check the VPS provider’s sustained-bandwidth terms and decide how the encoder will be monitored and restarted if it exits.
