OBS can loop a local file or playlist itself. MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding service that can be part of a larger broadcast workflow, but AWS’s documented OBS integration adds MediaPackage and is more elaborate than simply looping a file in OBS. An Indian VPS is not inherently required; choose a host based on its actual encoding capacity, network allowance, and reliability.
What the two options actually do
OBS handles the loop and encoding
OBS is software you configure to read media, encode it, and send the resulting stream to YouTube. Its Media Source can loop a local file, while its VLC Video source supports playlists and has Loop Playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed for that source to appear. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
On a VPS, you manage the host as well as OBS: the media files, scene and output settings, process restarts, and monitoring. The exact setup varies by VPS provider and operating system.
MediaLive is a managed encoding service
AWS describes Elemental MediaLive as a cloud-based, broadcast-grade live video processing service. AWS also describes an automation example that creates a channel and loops through an MP4 file. This is a service-oriented workflow, not a desktop application installed on a VPS.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS’s documented OBS Studio to MediaLive and MediaPackage workflow sends an OBS contribution feed into MediaLive and then MediaPackage. Its guide characterizes the example as testing-oriented and warns that one OBS input does not meet MediaLive’s two-input redundancy model.
OBS on a VPS vs. MediaLive
| Decision | OBS on a VPS | AWS Elemental MediaLive |
|---|---|---|
| Looping prerecorded video | OBS Media Source can loop a local file; VLC Video can loop a playlist. | AWS documents an MP4-looping channel automation example; setup is service-oriented. |
| Workflow | OBS reads and encodes the media, then connects to YouTube. Host setup depends on the provider and configuration. | Configured channel, inputs, and outputs; AWS’s OBS example adds MediaPackage downstream. |
| Operational responsibility | You manage OBS, the VPS, restarts, and stream configuration. | AWS operates the managed encoding service; you still configure the channel and any related services. |
| Cost basis | Depends on the VPS plan, available resources, network limits, and possible egress charges. No provider quote is established here. | Depends on resource state and configured inputs and outputs. A running output can still be charged while paused. |
| Redundancy | Depends on the host and your workflow; no VPS provider design is established here. | MediaLive supports high availability, but the cited OBS integration example’s single input does not provide the two-input redundancy model. |
| Best fit | A creator seeking a direct file or playlist loop and willing to operate a host. | A broadcast-style managed workflow that needs configured encoding and may use broader AWS media services. |
How to loop a video with OBS on a VPS
- Check the VPS before choosing it. Match its sustained CPU or GPU encoding capability to your intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Confirm its network throughput and bandwidth or egress limits, and decide how you will restart OBS and notice a stopped stream. An Indian location is a hosting choice, not a requirement established for YouTube streaming.
- Install OBS and prepare the media. Put the recording on storage the VPS can access. For a playlist, install VLC as well; OBS’s VLC Video source will not appear without it.
- Add the looping source. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, select the playlist, and check that Loop Playlist is enabled. The OBS guide documents these source controls at Media Sources.
- Set the stream output for your channel. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password; do not publish or share it. In Settings → Output, select an encoder available on the VPS and configure bitrate and other output values for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Confirm the current YouTube encoder and live-stream requirements for your channel before going live.
- Start and verify the stream. Start streaming in OBS and check YouTube Studio’s live control room for an incoming signal and a stable preview before relying on the loop. Confirm the media advances or repeats as expected, and check again after any VPS or OBS restart.
Do not assume that a VPS plan advertised as compatible can sustain your chosen settings. OBS says its CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its baseline system requirements do not guarantee streaming capability. If performance is inadequate, simplify the scene or reduce output resolution or frame rate. See OBS System Requirements and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

How to assess MediaLive and AWS costs
MediaLive is not priced as one universal monthly service for this scenario. AWS’s MediaLive pricing guide describes charges based on configured inputs and outputs and the resource’s state. AWS states: “The charge applies even if the output has been paused by the user or by Elemental Live.” Estimate from the channel configuration and expected running time, and account for any additional AWS services in the workflow.
For OBS, request a current quote for the VPS you would actually use and check its CPU or GPU, bandwidth allowance, and egress charges. Without a selected MediaLive configuration and VPS plan, a meaningful cost comparison cannot be reduced to one monthly figure.

Reliability, compatibility, and YouTube policy
MediaLive’s product-level high-availability capabilities should not be confused with redundancy in every workflow built around it: AWS’s cited OBS example has a single OBS input and explicitly does not supply the two inputs in MediaLive’s redundancy model. A VPS setup’s resilience likewise depends on the host and the recovery arrangements you configure.
YouTube lists AWS Elemental MediaLive among its verified encoders, but says listed products are not made by YouTube and should be evaluated for the user’s needs. Verification is a compatibility signal, not an endorsement or a guarantee that a particular channel setup will work. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Check current YouTube Live policies and your channel’s eligibility and settings, and ensure you have the rights needed for the video and audio. The sources cited here do not determine whether a specific continuous prerecorded stream meets YouTube policy.

- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC on the VPS, then reopen or refresh OBS’s source options.
- The video ends instead of repeating: Check Loop on a Media Source, or Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source.
- The stream drops or OBS reports encoding trouble: Check sustained CPU/GPU load and output settings; simplify the scene or lower resolution or frame rate if the host cannot keep up. Review OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guidance.
- YouTube receives no signal: Recheck the selected service and stream key in Settings → Stream, then verify the incoming preview in YouTube Studio. If you reset the key in YouTube Studio, update OBS with the new one.
- The VPS stops or the stream fails after a restart: Check the provider’s uptime and restart controls, and verify that OBS launches with the intended media and stream settings. A VPS does not remove the need to manage the host.
