Ending a YouTube broadcast does not stop its AWS Elemental MediaLive channel. In the AWS console, select the channel and choose Stop, then confirm its state reaches IDLE. A stopped channel can still incur idle charges, and connected services such as MediaConnect or a multiplex may continue billing independently.
Stop the MediaLive channel and verify its state
- In the AWS console, select the account and Region where the channel was created. Open MediaLive → Channels and locate the channel.
- Inspect its state. If it is RUNNING, select it and choose Stop. You can also use the MediaLive StopChannel API operation.
- Check the channel list or details again. STOPPING means the transition is in progress; wait and verify that the channel reaches IDLE.
A YouTube broadcast ending and a MediaLive channel stopping are separate events. AWS notes that when live streaming stops, the MediaLive channel keeps running and incurs costs. AWS’s documented console procedure is to stop the channel; its 2023 article describes an automation workflow for stopping after input loss, not an automatic instruction from YouTube. Do not assume ending the YouTube stream sends MediaLive a stop command.
Why charges can continue after the channel is idle
MediaLive charges depend on resource state and configuration, not only on whether viewers can see a live broadcast. AWS distinguishes a running channel from an idle one, and the associated inputs and outputs affect charges.
| Resource or state | What AWS billing guidance says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| RUNNING channel | Configured inputs and outputs can accrue running charges even when no content is arriving or being produced. Pausing pipelines still counts as a running channel. | Stop the channel; pausing pipelines is not a billing stop. |
| IDLE channel | An idle channel can incur an idle channel charge. | Confirm the state is IDLE, then inspect the applicable idle-resource line items. |
| Attached push input | A push input can incur an idle input charge when the channel is stopped. | Identify the input type. Delete an unused push input only if you do not need to reuse it. |
| Attached pull input | An idle pull input does not incur an idle input resource charge. | Check the channel’s input configuration rather than assuming all idle inputs bill alike. |
AWS describes MediaLive pricing as a combination of input processing, output processing, enabled add-ons, and—where applicable—idle-resource and data-transfer charges. The applicable amount depends on the Region and the deployed configuration; the public rate information alone cannot identify the cause or calculate your account’s bill.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check services that do not stop with the channel
MediaConnect flows and outputs
If MediaConnect supplies the channel, inspect the associated flow and outputs. AWS warns that MediaConnect outputs do not automatically stop when the MediaLive channel stops; they may continue trying to send data and create additional flow charges. Stop unused outputs or flows as appropriate.
Multiplexes
If the channel belongs to a multiplex, check the multiplex’s state separately. Stopping a channel in a multiplex does not stop the multiplex; AWS says multiplex charges continue until the multiplex itself is stopped.

Other invoice items
Do not assume another service is responsible without checking your bill. Review the actual usage entries for the relevant date range and Region, and investigate other services only if they appear in your account’s billing data. A channel must be idle before it can be deleted, and deleting it should not be treated as cleanup for every connected resource.
Trace the charge in Billing and Cost Management
- Open AWS Billing and Cost Management and review the service and usage line items for the date range in question.
- Compare the usage against the channel’s Region, state, input type, outputs, add-ons, and any associated MediaConnect flow or multiplex.
- Use the line-item detail and your configuration to identify the billed resource. If the account data does not make the source clear, contact AWS Support for an account-specific review.
There is no universal post-stream bill amount: the sources do not establish a typical charge for an individual channel, and the actual cause requires your account’s billing data.

What an AWS India account should check
AWS says accounts with an India tax address are billed by AWS India, and AWS India invoices in INR. The account’s tax address determines the billing seller and applicable taxes; it does not change the MediaLive stop procedure. MediaLive rates still depend on the service Region and configuration. For an exact explanation of a charge, use the account’s own invoice and usage details rather than converting an illustrative rate into an INR estimate.
