AWS Elemental Live is an on-premises live video encoder and transcoder, deployed on hardware or virtual machines. It can process UHD video up to 4K, but support for a particular resolution, codec, color format, and container depends on the chosen input and output path. A 4K workflow therefore needs format and capacity checks for its specific equipment and destinations—not an assumed channel count.

What AWS Elemental Live does in a live video chain

Elemental Live processes real-time video for broadcast and streaming delivery. It is an encoder within a larger contribution-to-delivery workflow, not a complete viewer-facing streaming service. A typical chain begins with a source signal, passes through Elemental Live for encoding and packaging, and continues to an origin or packager, a content delivery network (CDN), and playback devices or a website. AWS describes the product and its deployment options.

The basic unit of work is an event. Its inputs identify and ingest source content; its output groups define how the video is encoded and packaged for delivery. When the event runs, Elemental Live processes video and associated audio, captions, and metadata, then sends the configured outputs downstream. AWS’s workflow overview explains this event-based model.

How to plan an Elemental Live workflow

Start with the complete route from source to playback, rather than choosing a codec in isolation. The answers determine which input, output group, package, and encoding settings make sense.

  1. Identify the source. Record the signal’s interface, resolution, frame rate, color space, bit depth, chroma sampling, and audio or caption requirements. Confirm that the intended Elemental Live deployment supports that input format.
  2. Define the destinations. List the downstream systems and playback endpoints, then confirm the packaging and codecs each supports. Different output groups and containers have different codec combinations.
  3. Configure the event’s inputs. Set up the source inputs that identify and ingest the required media. AWS’s supported-codecs documentation is a place to verify source compatibility.
  4. Choose output groups and packaging. Match each output to a downstream destination and its required container or protocol. Check the precise output-group and container combination in AWS’s live-output codec matrix.
  5. Set the output encodes. Choose codecs and per-stream quality parameters, including rate control and bitrate, frame rate, GOP, and quantization. Balance image quality against bitrate, processing demand, and delivery requirements.
  6. Validate the entire path. Verify that the source locks and stays synchronized, outputs reach the intended origin or packager, and target players can play them. Confirm capacity for the actual simultaneous workload before relying on the workflow in production.

What 4K UHD support means

AWS describes Elemental Live as supporting SD, HD, and UHD resolutions, with UHD extending up to 4K. Resolution and color space are separate choices: the product supports SDR and HDR, and SDR can be paired with SD, HD, or UHD; HDR is typically paired with HD or UHD. These broad capabilities do not establish that every interface, codec, container, or deployment supports every combination. Check the specific input and output path. See AWS’s explanation of color space and resolution.

SMPTE 2110 input

For SMPTE 2110, AWS documents uncompressed SD, HD, and 4K video using 4:2:2 chroma sampling and 10-bit depth. PTP synchronization is necessary for proper timing: without it, media streams may become unsynchronized during processing. These details apply to the documented SMPTE 2110 path, not to every Elemental Live input interface. Consult AWS’s supported-content documentation for the applicable input requirements.

H.264 and HEVC output choices

Codec availability depends on the output group and container. AWS’s live-output matrix lists H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) for DASH and for both standard HLS and fMP4 HLS; RTMP lists H.264. Do not infer from this that either codec works in every output format: verify the exact row for the package you intend to deliver.

HEVC support and HEVC licensing are related but distinct checks. AWS’s HEVC table separates input from output and specifies chroma sampling, bit depth, profile, and licensing. It lists HEVC input support for 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 at both 8-bit and 10-bit. For output, HEVC 4:2:0 requires the HC license; HEVC 4:2:2 requires purchase of the BCE license pack. AWS also notes that both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 are supported in raw outputs and MPEG-2 transport streams, while other containers support only 4:2:0. Confirm that the precise output format and license match your workflow in AWS’s HEVC support documentation.

AWS says video quality is equivalent at equivalent operating points for listed codecs on CPU-only and GPU-enabled appliances, and lists GPU-accelerated encoding for H.264 and HEVC on GPU-enabled systems. Equivalent quality does not mean equivalent capacity or cost; assess the intended model and workload. See AWS’s CPU and GPU codec guidance.

Capacity planning for 4K

Resolution alone cannot predict how many simultaneous outputs a system can encode. AWS identifies aggregate pixels per second across outputs as a key performance factor. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate and rate-control choices, and color depth all affect the processing workload; its guidance places HEVC above AVC (H.264) in relative processing demand. This is directional planning guidance, not a universal throughput benchmark. AWS’s performance documentation covers the relevant encoding factors.

In a distributed workflow, each rendition requires an output encode. AWS notes that an appliance may be able to produce only one output encode when that rendition is 4K, while an appliance may produce several lower-resolution renditions depending on its density. This is not a guaranteed channel or rendition count. Confirm capacity for the exact appliance or VM, configuration, codecs, and complete output workload.

AWS exposes quality settings per output stream, including rate-control mode and bitrate, frame rate, GOP, quantization, and lookahead, as well as a density-versus-quality balance. The practical task is to find an acceptable trade-off among image quality, bitrate and compute demand, then check latency and device compatibility against the delivery requirements. See AWS’s video quality controls and its performance guidance.

Appliance or virtual machine: what to compare

The right deployment depends on the full workflow, not just whether it can encode 4K. Compare the following before selecting hardware or a VM configuration:

  • Input interface and source format, including resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and chroma sampling.
  • Output group, container, codec, and playback compatibility required by every destination.
  • Required codec licenses, including the relevant HEVC output license where applicable.
  • Number of simultaneous encodes and the complete rendition stack, especially any 4K output.
  • CPU-only or GPU-enabled configuration and model-specific capacity evidence for the intended workload.
  • Synchronization requirements such as PTP for the documented SMPTE 2110 path.
  • Redundancy and distributed-encoding design, including what happens if an input, encoder, or downstream component fails.

AWS’s documentation explains these dependencies but does not supply a single performance figure that applies across configurations. For a production design, obtain capacity confirmation for the specific model or VM and workload rather than extrapolating from resolution alone.

Deployment validation checklist

  • Document source format and verify input compatibility.
  • For SMPTE 2110, confirm the documented signal format and PTP synchronization.
  • For every destination, verify the exact output group, container, codec, and player support.
  • Confirm HEVC direction, chroma sampling, bit depth, and required license package.
  • Estimate aggregate output workload using all renditions, frame rates, and quality settings; obtain model-specific capacity confirmation.
  • Test signal lock, audio and captions, output delivery, playback, and the planned redundancy behavior before launch.
