In Justin Carter’s April 27, 2024, Gizmodo/io9 essay, Avengers: Endgame is both a grand finale and an ending that Marvel did not let stay final. Carter celebrates the film’s emotional farewells and event-sized spectacle, while arguing that the franchise’s continued expansion made its sense of closure harder to sustain.
A finale built to feel like an event
Carter reads Endgame as the culmination of the Infinity Saga and a send-off for the original Avengers. Its scale is part of the point: the film gathers characters and story threads from across the saga into a climax designed to feel consequential, not merely like another installment.
That ambition also shapes the essay’s central tension. A story can deliver a powerful ending for its characters and still leave the larger franchise ready to continue. Carter’s “party that never stopped” metaphor captures the distance between the finale the film appears to offer and Marvel’s ongoing production of more films and Disney+ series.
What Carter praises: aftermath, callbacks, and payoff
Time with the survivors
One of the essay’s strengths is its attention to the film’s five-year aftermath of the Snap. Carter values the time Endgame gives surviving characters to live with loss before the story turns toward its climactic response. That pause helps the eventual reunion and confrontation carry emotional weight.

A middle built on recognition
Carter also points to the film’s callback-heavy middle: returning characters and familiar moments turn the accumulated history of the saga into part of the payoff. For viewers who have followed that history, recognition itself becomes a dramatic tool, connecting the present story to earlier chapters.
The portal sequence
The climactic portal sequence is another high point in Carter’s reading. It brings separated heroes together at the scale the film has been building toward, making spectacle and emotional payoff work in tandem. The scene’s impact depends not only on the action, but on the return of characters whose journeys began across the preceding films.
Where the film’s structure and character work strain
The essay does not treat spectacle as a solution to every storytelling problem. Carter questions the film’s structure and the uneven handling of some character arcs, setting its memorable set pieces against moments that feel less fully resolved.
Different responses to the Snap
Hawkeye and Thor embody sharply different responses to the catastrophe. Carter uses their contrasting trajectories as examples of how the film handles grief and change: the characters receive distinct paths, but the essay sees the treatment as uneven rather than uniformly satisfying.

Hulk and Banner’s resolution
The relationship between Hulk and Banner is another point of criticism. Carter objects to the resolution happening offscreen, which leaves a significant character development without the dramatic attention its setup might lead viewers to expect.
Natasha’s death
Natasha’s death is also part of the essay’s scrutiny of character handling. It sits within a film that is trying to honor its original heroes, but Carter’s broader concern is that not every arc receives equally persuasive treatment on the way to that farewell.

For Carter, the difficulty is not simply that Marvel kept making stories after Endgame. It is that the film was shaped to feel like a culmination, while the franchise continued to expand. In the essay’s view, that contrast made the transition from the Infinity Saga’s enormous climax feel abrupt, especially as later phases became disrupted and uneven.
This is Carter’s interpretation in an essay published April 27, 2024, around the film’s fifth anniversary—not a claim about universal audience response. The piece reflects on what Endgame seemed to conclude and how continued output complicated that experience. It does not establish Marvel’s release plans, audience reception, or franchise condition in 2026.
The essay’s lasting question
Carter’s argument holds two judgments together: Endgame can succeed as a celebratory, emotionally charged event and still expose the strain of making a franchise finale inside a franchise designed to continue. As he puts it, “The Infinity Saga may have ended, but like Journey, the MCU continued to play on, and onnnnn, and onnnnnnnnn, and onnnnnnn–”
That tension is what makes the essay’s framing useful: the party was memorable partly because it felt like a finale, but the music carried on after the apparent goodbye.
