On April 30, 2020, Anthony and Joe Russo marked the first anniversary of Avengers: Endgame’s release by sharing clips of opening-night crowd reactions. The footage captures cheers at several major story payoffs—but it documents particular screenings, not a universal response from every audience.

What the anniversary footage showed

Endgame opened in April 2019. A year later, the Russo brothers revisited the communal experience of watching it in a theater. The Independent’s April 30, 2020 report says the directors shared favorite reactions from one of the film’s first screenings, with footage shot from the back of a California theater.

The appeal of the clips lies in the contrast between the film’s long stretches of buildup and the audience’s sudden response to familiar heroes returning or a major moment landing. They offer a vivid record of people reacting together in a theater, rather than a controlled measure of how viewers felt.

Which moments drew cheers?

Coverage and reaction clips highlighted several payoffs. The available accounts describe different footage and do not establish that every moment came from one screening.

Moment What happens Evidence described in coverage
The heroes return Heroes who had been “dusted” reappear, prompting a crowd response. The Independent’s anniversary report identifies the return as a standout reaction in the director-shared footage.
Captain America catches Mjolnir Steve Rogers wields Thor’s hammer in battle. ComicBook.com’s December 2019 account describes cheers at the moment and the anniversary report also singles it out.
“On your left” and the portals Sam Wilson’s line cues the arrival of allies through the portals. ComicBook.com describes audience cheers as the portals open and heroes arrive.
“Avengers assemble” Steve Rogers gives the battle cry before the final charge. ComicBook.com identifies the line as another cheering point in the captured audio it discussed.

ComicBook.com characterized its December 2019 example as a fan’s captured audio paired with the film’s HD cut. That account is distinct from The Independent’s description of footage shared by the Russos; it should not be treated as proof that the directors recorded every crowd sound or that all clips show the same theater.

What the reactions can—and cannot—tell us

The clips show cheers and applause at particular screenings. They support the narrower point that some audiences responded intensely to these reveals and callbacks in a shared theater setting. They do not establish how common those reactions were, how loud they were across screenings, or whether every audience reacted alike. The cited material does not provide a representative study or a statistic measuring the prevalence or intensity of crowd reactions.

Release figures offer context for the film’s scale, not a substitute for that missing measure. The Walt Disney Company’s April 28, 2019 release reported an estimated $1.209 billion global opening weekend and said the film crossed $1 billion in five days. It also listed an A+ CinemaScore in the United States. Those are box-office and audience-grade figures, not counts of people cheering in theaters.

The communal experience behind the clips

Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ chief creative officer and an executive producer on Endgame, described his opening-night experience at a New York Film Academy panel: “It was maybe the most amazing experiences of my entire life mainly because they liked it and we worked hard on it! Being amongst that experience is something that only movies can do.” ComicBook.com reported the remarks.

In the anniversary coverage, Anthony Russo expressed a similar hope for audiences to gather again: “We eagerly await the day that we can all be back together in a theater, sharing these experiences once again.” The Independent quoted him in its April 30, 2020 report. In that first-anniversary moment, the crowd footage was not just a collection of loud reactions; it recalled the shared setting in which those surprises had first landed for moviegoers.
