Avatar: The Way of Water is James Cameron’s 2022 science-fiction action adventure and a direct sequel to Avatar. Set more than a decade after the first film, it follows Jake and Neytiri’s family as they encounter new Na’vi cultures and ocean life while trying to protect one another. Its family-centered story is paired with a major technical achievement: performance capture filmed in and around water.

James Cameron directed and produced the film with Jon Landau. Its listed cast includes Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis and Kate Winslet.
How did the underwater production work?
Rather than ask performers to imitate swimming on a dry stage, the filmmakers developed performance-capture methods for work underwater and at the surface. Cameron explained that filming in water let performers swim, enter and leave the water, and dive with natural movement. As he put it, “It looks real because the motion was real. And the emotion was real.” The comments and production details appear in [20th Century Studios’ production notes](https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/documents/avatar_the_way_of_water_production_notes_final_11-29-22_4a8ec7d8.pdf).

- Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their planet.
The production notes describe a tank built for underwater performance capture that was 120 feet long, 60 feet wide and 30 feet deep, with a capacity of more than 250,000 gallons. The water space served as a performance-capture “Volume”; the production notes also describe a current-generating propeller system and practical interaction with waves. Disney’s [production feature](https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/avatar-the-way-of-water-underwater-performance-capture/) gives the same tank dimensions and capacity.
A separate, later [Avatar.com feature](https://www.avatar.com/news/fire-and-water-making-the-avatar-films) about the documentary Fire And Water: Making The Avatar Films refers to a 680,000-gallon tank used by production personnel. That is a distinct account and should not be confused with the tank described in the film’s 2022 production notes.

Where can you watch it, and what formats are available?
The 20th Century Studios film page promotes streaming on Disney+, while streaming rights, availability and subscription terms can vary by country and change over time. Disney’s June 2023 announcement named Disney+ and Max as launch platforms for that date; it is a historical announcement rather than a guarantee of present availability.
