What is the latest Avatar sequel?
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in James Cameron’s series, was released on December 19, 2025, according to 20th Century Studios. The studio lists its runtime as 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Its story follows Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family after a death in the family. The official synopsis places them among the Metkayina and describes a journey to protect a loved one that brings them into conflict with the Mangkwan, also called the Ash People. The clan blames Eywa for the volcanic devastation of its home.
The Sully family and the Ash People
A D23 character guide published in December 2025 says the story begins a few weeks after Avatar: The Way of Water. The family is grieving Neteyam and tries to take Spider to the Omatikaya stronghold, High Camp, before the group is attacked by the Mangkwan, led by Varang. The RDA is regrouping after its defeat.

Their conflict with the Sullys carries the story across Pandora. These official descriptions outline the setup, not a complete account of the film’s plot.
When does Avatar 4 come out?
The Associated Press reported in August 2025 that Avatar 4 was dated for 2029. That is a reported target year, not a guarantee of release. In an AP report dated December 21, 2025, the fourth film was described as written but not greenlit; Cameron had said whether the series continued depended in part on Fire and Ash performing well.
