The film was not shut out at the Oscars. It earned two nominations at the 98th Academy Awards and won the Visual Effects award.
The worldwide total and where it came from
Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime chart, accessed October 8, 2026, shows the following figures. Box Office Mojo figures are database-reported and can be revised, so they should be read as the chart’s current reading rather than an audited statement.

| Domestic lifetime gross | $404,340,010 |
| International lifetime gross | $1,081,659,880 |
| Worldwide lifetime gross | $1,485,999,890 |
| Shortfall against $1.5 billion | $14,000,110 |
International markets produced about 72.8% of the reported worldwide total, and domestic about 27.2%. Because the bulk of the gross came from outside the United States and Canada, a worldwide figure should not be presented as a domestic result. When comparing this film with others, keep domestic and international figures separate.
How the milestone timeline played out
The film’s money milestones and awards events fell on different dates. These are the dated points the record establishes:

#1 Best Overall
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
- December 19, 2025: start of the release span Box Office Mojo lists for the film.
- January 4, 2026: The Walt Disney Company announced that the film “has officially surpassed $1 billion at the global box office,” making it the third film in the franchise to pass $1 billion worldwide.
- January 22, 2026: Avatar.com announced the film’s Academy Award nominations.
- March 15, 2026: the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, which honored films released in 2025, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
- April 16, 2026: end of the release span Box Office Mojo lists for the film.
The $1 billion announcement is a milestone statement made in January. The $1,485,999,890 figure is the later lifetime chart total. The public record establishes both points but not the week-by-week path between them.
The Oscar record: two nominations and one win
The film received two nominations and won one award. The 20th Century Studios film page lists it as the Visual Effects winner and a Costume Design nominee.

The official franchise site, Avatar.com, put it this way in its awards announcement: “The third film in James Cameron’s beloved franchise has earned two Oscar® nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, honoring the incredible artists who helped bring the world of Avatar to life.” That is promotional phrasing from the studio’s franchise site, not independent analysis.

The phrase does not match the record. A snub means a film was overlooked or shut out, and this film was nominated in two categories and won one. The defensible point is narrower: a film with a major award win still finished below $1.5 billion worldwide. The headline’s framing invites a causal reading that the evidence does not support.

What the record does not establish
- A causal link. The record gives the gross and the award outcome, but it does not show that the Oscar result, or the lack of a Best Picture-level nomination, affected ticket sales. Any claim that awards recognition moved the gross is a hypothesis, not a finding.
- A studio target. The record does not identify $1.5 billion as a published goal for the film. It is a round-number benchmark used in the headline.
Reading the gross without over-reading it
- Budget. Box Office Mojo lists a $400 million budget. This is a reported figure, not an audited one, and it is not evidence of profit.
- Gross is not profit. The reported budget alone does not account for marketing, exhibitor shares, distribution terms, or other costs. A worldwide gross of $1.486 billion therefore does not, on its own, tell you what the film earned for its backers.
- Ranking. On the chart consulted, the film ranks 18th on the worldwide lifetime list, between Top Gun: Maverick and Frozen II. Any ranking comparison should use the same chart and its lifetime-gross basis.
