Avatar: Fire and Ash did not reach $2 billion worldwide. It opened to about $345–347 million in December 2025—less than Avatar: The Way of Water—and The Numbers currently lists its worldwide total at $1,490,386,712. The $1.7–$1.8 billion figure sometimes associated with the film was a conditional forecast made after its opening weekend, not a pre-release opening prediction.

Disney had reported a different, earlier milestone: on January 4, 2026, the studio said the film had reached $1.083 billion worldwide, including $306 million domestic and $777.1 million internationally. The figures refer to different reporting points, so they should not be treated as competing final totals.
How much did it make on opening weekend?
The opening estimates varied slightly between contemporaneous reports. Disney reported a $347.1 million worldwide opening, comprising $89 million domestic and $258.1 million international, while the Associated Press reported $345 million worldwide, with $88 million domestic and $257 million international, based on studio estimates.

| Opening figure | Disney, December 22, 2025 | Associated Press, December 21, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | $347.1 million | $345 million |
| Domestic | $89 million | $88 million |
| International | $258.1 million | $257 million |
These were early estimates reported on adjacent days, not evidence of a meaningful discrepancy. Disney also reported a $57.6 million opening in China. Premium formats accounted for 66% of the opening, and 3D showings contributed 56% of box-office revenue, according to Disney. Those are overlapping format measures, not shares to add together.
How did the opening compare with the earlier Avatar films?
The Associated Press reported that The Way of Water opened to $435 million worldwide, including $134 million in North America. Fire and Ash therefore started substantially lower, with its domestic opening 35% below its predecessor’s, according to AP. The first Avatar opened domestically to $77 million and ultimately grossed $2.92 billion worldwide, AP reported.

| Film | Worldwide opening | Domestic or North American opening | Worldwide lifetime gross |

The comparisons show a smaller opening and a lower listed final total for Fire and Ash. They do not show that opening weekend alone determines a film’s eventual gross. The earlier films built large totals over extended theatrical runs, but their performance did not guarantee that the third film would follow the same path.
What did the $1.7–$1.8 billion forecast mean?
After the opening weekend, TheWrap cited theatrical sources and box-office analysts who estimated a $1.7–$1.8 billion worldwide finish if Fire and Ash held over like The Way of Water. TheWrap also reported that $2 billion was unlikely. This was a conditional lifetime-gross estimate made after the opening—not a forecast of the opening weekend and not a guaranteed result. The later total listed by The Numbers fell below that range.

The distinction matters because the franchise’s previous box-office strength came from what happened after opening. Film consultant David A. Gross told the AP: “The openings are not what the ‘Avatar’ movies are about,” and “It’s what they do after they open that made them the no. 2 and no. 3 biggest films of all time.” That observation explains the logic behind comparing holdovers, but it does not make a prior film’s run a reliable prediction for a sequel.

20th Century Studios lists Avatar: Fire and Ash as released on December 19, 2025, with a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 3 hours 15 minutes. The studio’s film page identifies Disney+ as a streaming option; availability depends on territory and can change, so check the local service listing. The Numbers lists a Walt Disney Home Entertainment video release date of March 31, 2026, but that listing alone does not establish the format or edition of any specific retailer product.
