Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed $1.48 billion worldwide, according to Disney UK’s announcement dated June 10, 2026. The headline’s other claims do not hold up. The reported production budget is at least $400 million, not $200 million, and none of the sources reviewed describes the film as ending the franchise. The word “triples” also names no baseline, so it cannot be checked as written. The sections below explain each point with its date and source.
What the headline gets wrong
- The budget. The Associated Press reported on December 21, 2025 that the film had a production budget of at least $400 million. AP presented this as an estimate, and it does not appear on the studio’s official film page. We found no source supporting $200 million.
- The “franchise-ending” label. Fire and Ash is the third Avatar film, directed by James Cameron. AP’s December 2025 report said that films four and five had been written but not greenlit at that time. That is a dated report. It does not establish current production status, and no source says future sequels have been cancelled.
- “Triples.” A multiple requires a starting figure and a specific measure, such as worldwide lifetime gross, domestic lifetime gross or opening-weekend gross. The headline names neither.
How much Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed
Box-office totals change as a film’s run continues, so each figure below carries its own date. They are snapshots taken at different points, not competing final numbers.
| Measure | Figure | Date | Source | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide opening weekend | $347.1 million (estimated) | December 21, 2025 | The Walt Disney Company | Opening announcement estimate; not the final gross |
| Worldwide interim total | $1.083 billion ($306 million domestic; $777.1 million international) | January 4, 2026 | The Walt Disney Company | Cumulative total as of that announcement |
| Worldwide gross | $1.48 billion | June 10, 2026 | Disney UK | Most recent total in the sources reviewed |
| Combined worldwide gross, all three Avatar films | More than $6.35 billion | January 4, 2026 | The Walt Disney Company | Franchise aggregate as of that date; not updated in the sources reviewed |
The earlier January totals are not conflicting final figures; they simply predate the June announcement. The sources reviewed do not give a domestic or international split for the $1.48 billion total.
Why “triples” cannot be checked as written
The three readings below use only figures from the table above, and each produces a different answer.
#1 Best Overall
| Possible reading | Baseline used | Ratio from reported figures | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide gross compared with opening weekend | $347.1 million (estimated, December 2025) | About 4.3 times ($1.48 billion ÷ $347.1 million) | Compares a full run with a single opening estimate. The ratio is above three, but the comparison is mixed. |
| Worldwide gross compared with production budget | At least $400 million (AP estimate, December 2025) | Up to about 3.7 times, because the budget is a floor | A gross-to-budget ratio, not a profit measure. See the next section. |
| Domestic gross compared with an earlier domestic total | Not stated in the sources reviewed for a later date | Cannot be calculated | The only domestic total reviewed is the $306 million figure from January 4, 2026. |
Until a headline names its baseline and date, “triples” should not be repeated as a fact about this film.
Budget, gross and profit are different measures
A box-office gross is not studio profit. The sources reviewed give no marketing budget, exhibitor share, net receipts or final profit calculation, so no profit figure can be stated. A film’s budget and gross can be compared, but that comparison alone does not show whether the film made money for its studio.

On cost, Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore senior media analyst, told AP: “You can’t exactly create the world of Pandora on the cheap.” That is his opinion, reported in AP’s December 2025 coverage, not an independently verified cost figure.
Where the franchise stands
AP’s December 2025 reporting gave two lifetime totals for earlier films: Avatar (2009) eventually grossed $2.92 billion worldwide, and Avatar: The Way of the Water grossed $2.3 billion worldwide. Those are AP’s figures, not totals reconciled against current studio data.

On the opening, David A. Gross, a film consultant, told AP: “The openings are not what the ‘Avatar’ movies are about.” That is his view of why the franchise’s openings matter less than its long runs, not a measured fact.
Whether another Avatar film will follow is not settled by the sources reviewed. The December 2025 status for films four and five is the latest confirmed information available here.

Bottom line on the headline
The film’s worldwide gross is $1.48 billion as of June 10, 2026. Its reported budget is at least $400 million. The sources do not describe the film as franchise-ending, and “triples” needs a named comparison before it means anything.
