Earthbending is the art of manipulating earth and rock. Its best-known specialized techniques include sandbending, metalbending and lavabending; seismic sense is different: it uses vibrations through the ground to perceive the surroundings. These abilities do not all work alike, and the evidence for how each one is defined is not equally strong.
What counts as earthbending?
Earthbending is one of the four elemental bending arts in the Avatar setting. Its basic material is earth and rock. The techniques associated with it extend beyond moving solid ground, but some are adaptations to a different material and one is primarily sensory rather than manipulative.
The distinctions matter: sand is loose and shifting, metalbending is tied to earth traces in metal, lavabending works on molten earth, and seismic sense reads vibrations. The detailed descriptions below draw mainly on the fan-maintained Avatar Wiki’s earthbending reference; the official Avatar Studios listing independently confirms Toph’s earthbending and metalbending skills.
How do the recognized forms differ?
| Technique | What it works with or does | How it differs from ordinary earthbending |
|---|---|---|
| Earthbending | Earth and rock | The core art: manipulating solid ground and stone. |
| Sandbending | Loose sand, especially in desert terrain | Adapts earthbending to material that shifts and flows more readily than rock or compact soil. |
| Metalbending | Metal containing traces of earth, as described by the secondary reference | A specialized manipulation skill associated with Toph; Avatar Studios lists both skills for her. |
| Seismic sense | Vibrations transmitted through the ground | A way to perceive surroundings, not a separate material-manipulation art. |
| Lavabending | Molten earth | Manipulates earth in a molten state; universal rules about who can learn it are not established by the sources cited here. |
Earthbending: the foundation
Ordinary earthbending manipulates earth and rock. The reference places the art among the four bending disciplines and associates it with the Earth Kingdom and United Republic. That is a useful orientation, rather than a complete canon taxonomy: the available official character listing confirms particular skills but does not define every technique or the boundaries between them.

#1 Best Overall
Sandbending: earthbending on shifting ground
Sandbending adapts the art to loose sand, particularly the terrain of the Si Wong Desert. Sand does not hold together like rock or packed soil; it shifts and flows, so controlling it calls for working with a less stable material. The Avatar Wiki describes this as a distinct adaptation, but the sources cited here do not establish that every earthbender can readily master it.
Metalbending: Toph’s specialized skill
Metalbending is part of an earthbending explainer, not an unrelated elemental art. Avatar Studios’ character listing identifies Toph’s skills as both earthbending and metalbending. That official listing establishes the association, though it does not explain how the technique works.
Rank #2
The Avatar Wiki’s explanation is that Toph detects traces of earth within processed metal and manipulates those traces. Treat that as a secondary-source account of the mechanism, rather than something the official character listing itself spells out. The cited material also does not establish that all earthbenders can metalbend.
Seismic sense: perceiving through the ground
Seismic sense is a perception technique: an earthbender senses vibrations through contact with the ground and uses them to form a picture of nearby surroundings. The Avatar Wiki credits the ability to blind badgermoles and describes skilled earthbenders as using it to sense their environment. It also says sand can make the technique less precise for earthbenders unfamiliar with that terrain.

Because this account comes from a secondary reference, its details should not be mistaken for an official, exhaustive set of rules. The key distinction is functional: seismic sense detects through ground vibrations; it does not bend a new element.
Lavabending: manipulating molten earth
Lavabending is narrowly described as manipulating molten earth. The specialized-techniques reference classifies it as an earthbending sub-skill. That definition makes it useful to include among earthbending techniques, but the available sources do not settle who can learn it or whether it depends on a particular innate aptitude.
Rank #4
There is no basis in these sources for describing lavabending as a combination of earth- and firebending, assigning it to a fixed number of characters, or stating a universal inheritance rule.

These are edge cases, not securely established entries in a standard list of earthbending forms. The Avatar Wiki mentions Yun liquefying stone, while a scholarly result discusses glassbending in The Shadow of Kyoshi. Neither source supplied here establishes an official classification or definitive terminology for those abilities. They are best treated as reported techniques whose place in a formal taxonomy remains unclear, rather than presented as settled, widely recognized sub-skills.
How the live-action series draws on martial arts
Netflix Tudum says the live-action earthbending movement draws on nanquan, specifically hung ga or fut gar kung fu. That is production context for the live-action adaptation, not a claim that one martial-arts influence governs every earthbender in the animated franchise. See Netflix Tudum’s explanation of bending and the live-action cast.

For readers interested in translating bending into a game, the Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game Core Book sample includes an Earthbending Techniques section. The sample is useful for seeing how the tabletop game presents techniques; it does not establish canon rules for the animated or live-action stories.
