Its picks are an editorial shopping list, not the results of a comparative test; prices, formulas and availability may have changed since publication. Here is what the guide recommended and what Australian shoppers should check before choosing.
What BB cream does—and what the label does not promise
BB stands for “beauty balm” or “blemish balm.” BB creams are complexion products that combine tint with varying textures and, sometimes, skincare ingredients. Paula’s Choice Australia characterizes BB creams as generally sheer-to-light coverage, often with a focus on hydration and sun protection; CC creams more often aim for light-to-medium coverage and visibly even tone. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every product.
As CHOICE quotes Paula Begoun, “There’s nothing in the formula that can magically match your skin tone, but western BB creams tend to be sheer and have a thinner, more lotion-like texture, so it’s easier to match a variety of skin tones when there is less coverage.” Shade range still matters, especially if you want more coverage. Begoun also cautions that a foundation or tinted moisturiser can offer similar functions: the BB label alone does not make a product superior.
For a useful comparison, look at the actual coverage, finish, shade options and verified product claims—not only the category name or the guide’s “best” label.

These are the guide’s attributed recommendations. The listed prices below are the article’s prices at publication on 3 December 2024, not current offers. Current Australian availability was independently confirmed in the cited material only for Anastasia Beverly Hills on Sephora Australia’s category page.

How to choose among the picks
- Start with finish and skin feel. The guide describes Garnier as mattifying and Erborian as hydrating. For the L’Oréal, Covergirl, La Roche-Posay and Missha products, it is safer to confirm the current Australian product details rather than infer performance from the category or name.
- Check coverage and shade in person where possible. PerthNow flags Erborian’s limited shade range. CHOICE describes a historical user trial of 10 BB creams involving 34 women, with products used for three consecutive days and assessments including texture, coverage, moisturising performance, fragrance and willingness to buy at a comparable price. That trial concerned a different product set and is not a current ranking of these seven.
- Treat SPF as a labelled product claim, not a substitute for checking directions. PerthNow reported SPF figures for some picks, but formulations and Australian labelling can change. Check the current packaging and official Australian product information before relying on an SPF designation.
- Compare the current price and stock. The prices in the guide are historical. Apart from the Sephora listing for Anastasia Beverly Hills noted above, the cited current material does not establish present Australian availability or pricing for the seven picks.
One additional Australian mineral option
Australian Skin Institute’s Mineral BB Cream with SPF15 is an option outside PerthNow’s seven. Its product page, accessed 7 October 2026, lists Cool Beige, Neutral, Honey and Warm Beige and describes medium coverage. The page also showed a $69 price and a sold-out notice at that time; both price and stock can change. Review the brand’s current ingredients, directions and availability before deciding whether it suits you.

Applying BB cream
- Prepare skin. PerthNow recommends starting with clean, moisturised skin and allowing skincare to absorb before applying the BB cream.
- Apply a small amount. Garnier Australia’s guide says to apply BB cream after skincare and gives finger application guidance. PerthNow also recommends fingers for application.
- Build only where needed. Add another thin layer where you want more coverage. PerthNow suggests spot concealer for areas needing extra coverage with Erborian.
- Set if you prefer. PerthNow suggests finishing with powder or setting spray; this is an optional tip, not a requirement.
