When was the August 2025 full Moon?
The full phase occurred at 07:54 UTC on August 9, 2025, according to Timeanddate.com. In Eastern Daylight Time, the same instant was 3:54 a.m. on August 9; Live Science reported it as 3:55 a.m. ET. A full Moon is an instant, not a full night: the Moon appears nearly full in the days before and after peak illumination.
Because time zones differ, the phase can fall on a different local calendar date elsewhere. Timeanddate.com defines a full Moon as “the moment when the Sun and the Moon are on opposite sides of Earth, and the visible side of the Moon is fully lit up.”
What is August’s full Moon called?
The widely used name for the August full Moon is the Sturgeon Moon. Timeanddate.com links the name to the large number of sturgeon found in the Great Lakes region at this time of year. Its list of other August names includes Grain Moon, Corn Moon, Lynx Moon, and Lightning Moon.

These names are not universal or official labels shared by every community. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says its Moon names draw on Native American, Colonial American, and European sources, and that names traditionally could refer to the whole lunar month rather than just the exact full Moon. Its account connects Sturgeon Moon with lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, and also lists Flying Up Moon, Corn Moon, Harvest Moon, Ricing Moon, and Black Cherries Moon. When could you see it?
The Moon’s rise time depends on location, so there is no single universal viewing time. Live Science gave New York City as an example: moonrise was 8:03 p.m. ET on Friday, August 8, and 8:32 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 9. Those times are specific to New York City; check a local moonrise calendar for another location.
