The Vancouver Island Adult ADHD Society’s profile of Neurodivergent: A Film describes Afton Quast Saler’s personal diagnosis journey. It says she used Sari Solden’s Women with Attention Deficit Disorder for guidance. That account is a personal story; it does not establish that the book diagnoses or treats ADHD.
ADHD Embrace’s 18 August 2026 response characterizes the promotion of Channel 4’s The Great ADHD Myth? as asking whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder or a social construct. That characterization belongs to the charity’s response; it should not be mistaken for a neutral summary of the program or its conclusions.

What does clinical guidance say ADHD is?
NICE describes ADHD as “a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by a persistent pattern of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention that interferes with daily and occupational functioning.” This wording appears in section 2.1 of NICE HTG729, published 21 October 2024. NICE guidance gives estimates of around 5% of children globally and 3% to 4% of adults in the UK. These are estimates cited in guidance on digital technologies for ADHD assessment, not counts from a particular documentary or a specific year of diagnosis.
Can an ADHD documentary diagnose me?
No. In the UK, NICE recommends diagnosis by a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician, or another appropriately qualified healthcare professional with relevant training and expertise. The assessment should include clinical and psychosocial evaluation, developmental and psychiatric history, and observer reports. Rating scales may help, but should not be the sole basis for diagnosis. NICE also says symptoms must cause at least moderate impairment in multiple settings.

A documentary can help you recognize questions to discuss, but identifying with a person onscreen or with a list of traits does not establish a diagnosis. If you are concerned about persistent difficulties, seek advice from a qualified health professional in your area.
How should I assess claims made in an ADHD film?
Separate what the film shows from what it claims about ADHD in general. A moving account can convey one person’s experience without showing how common that experience is or proving a cause, treatment effect, or diagnostic rule.

- Identify the subject: Is the film about children, adults, families, or one individual? A story about one group may not apply to others.
- Notice the purpose: Is it a personal memoir, an educational overview, or an investigation challenging a claim? The purpose shapes which questions and voices receive attention.
- Check expert context: Does the film include qualified clinical expertise and current guidance, or rely mainly on testimony and commentary?
- Separate anecdotes from population evidence: A person’s experience is valuable, but it cannot on its own establish how ADHD presents across a population.
- Check attribution: Distinguish a participant’s account, an advocacy organization’s position, the filmmakers’ promotional claims, and clinical guidance.
- Verify availability: Streaming access can vary by country and date; check the platform’s current listing in your region.
What to do if a film resonates with you
Use that reaction as a reason to seek reliable information, not as a self-diagnosis. Write down the difficulties you experience and how they affect daily life in different settings, then discuss them with a qualified professional. NICE recommends providing information and support after diagnosis; the appropriate next steps depend on an individual assessment and local services.
