Attack on Titan Finale: Eren Yeager’s Motives, Explained

Eren’s decision is driven by more than one motive. The finale connects his imagined freedom, fear for Paradis, and his friends’ future while leaving the moral cost unmistakable.

Full spoilers for the anime finale and manga chapter 139. Eren Yeager’s motives are layered: he longs for the freedom he imagined beyond the walls, fears what the outside world may do to Paradis, and wants his friends to become the people who stop him. The finale also presents the Rumbling as something Eren himself wanted—not simply a plan forced on him by fate. Understanding those motives explains his choices; it does not justify the mass killing.

Why did Eren start the Rumbling?

The finale does not reduce Eren’s decision to one clean objective. In its ending explanation, ComicBook.com describes him as acting from personal desire, fear for Paradis, and a wish to shape the role his friends would play. Those motives overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a strategic reason for letting his friends oppose him does not erase the destruction he chose to unleash.

Freedom and the world beyond the walls

Eren’s idea of freedom had long been tied to the world he hoped lay beyond the walls. The finale’s account makes his choice more than a detached military calculation: he is also pursuing a personal desire, even when the world he encounters fails to match the freedom he imagined. That connection is a reading of his character arc, not a statement attributed to creator Hajime Isayama.

Fear for Paradis

Eren fears that the outside world will retaliate against Paradis. That fear helps explain his attempt to change the balance of power and why he wants his friends to be seen as the people who stopped him. It does not establish that destroying the world was necessary or morally defensible.

The future he wants for his friends

The ending account says Eren pushes his friends to fight him so they can become heroes who stand against the threat to Paradis. This explains why he allows them to oppose him, but it is a brutal way to shape their future: he places them in danger while killing on an immense scale.

Did Eren have a choice?

The story connects Eren’s understanding of events to Titan powers and foreknowledge, complicating how freely he experiences the future. But the ending account also describes him as wanting to carry out the destruction. The available explanation therefore does not support either extreme—that Eren was an entirely unconstrained strategist or a passive instrument compelled against his will. His agency remains part of the tragedy, not an excuse for the consequences.

How many people did the Rumbling kill?

ComicBook.com’s November 4, 2023 ending explainer reports that 80% of the world’s population was killed. That is the outlet’s account of a fictional event, not a real-world statistic; the figure is not independently verified here against the manga or episode.

Did Eren’s plan bring lasting peace?

No. The finale’s ending account describes conflict continuing in later generations. Eren changes the immediate political and Titan-power situation, but the story does not present his actions as ending war or permanently breaking humanity’s cycle of violence.

What did Isayama change or contribute to the anime ending?

In pre-broadcast comments published November 1, 2023, on the official Attack on Titan anime website, Isayama said: “Also this time, by my request, I got to draw a little bit of the rough draft toward the end.” This confirms some author-requested involvement in material near the anime’s ending; it does not establish a wholesale replacement of the manga ending or itemize every adaptation difference.

The official production note identifies the anime as based on Isayama’s manga. The anime finale and manga chapter 139 are different formats, with different pacing, and viewers may read Eren’s desire, fear, and his friends’ role with different emphasis. Those are interpretive comparisons, not claims established by Isayama’s production comment. Readers who want to compare the source text can look for Attack on Titan Volume 34, checking the edition and current availability before buying.
